Hey Andrew,

If it's not too late, you might consider using a different intermediate 50* box. This one reverses the direction of the tail drive due to the floating gears. The only unknown is if it will fit ok. http://www.psg-dynamics.de/562/prod...ar-hd-peek.html

Thanks for the link. I actually saw that one and it will be option B. If I didn't already have the existing box installed I would probably go this route to start with. It does look pretty sweet but will be an even tighter fit than the one I have.

I need to ask a question. If I go with the IGB that reverses the direction of the drive shaft it will make the tail rotor turn in the correct direction but it will be turning the helical bevel gears in the TRG opposite as well. Can helical cut gears operate in either direction or are they direction specific?

IMHO, for this kind of load, it shouldn't be an issue. I would check the TGB mesh and backlash by providing some resistance on the TGB output shaft during the "proper" rotation direction. The gears should be quiet whether the output shaft is loaded or not. As long as the mesh is correct and there isn't any lateral shaft play, I'd be satisfied. I flip the same type of gears around in the Kasama TGB and don't have any issues at all. It's not until you put serious load on palloid spiral bevel that one needs to be concerned with mechanical advantage of gear orientation.

Sean, it would fit but it would have to be mounted about 12mm lower than where I have mine which would increase the angle between the output shaft on the mechanics and the tail drive shaft, which on mine is about 3.5*.

Well it's been a long time coming but yesterday I finally received my tail rotor gear box and a few days before that I received my main blades and tail blades. I now have everything I need to get this bird in the air.

Work has already started on permanently mounting the mechanics and the tail drive system. My goal is to have it flyable for Dalton. I have a lot of work to do but should be able to get it done.

Here are some pictures of the tail rotor gear boxes. The blue one was the original that is set up for the wrong rotation direction and cannot be changed. The smaller one is the first one that was ordered but was not really big enough and the output shaft is not long enough to reach out the side of the tail fin pod. The big silver one is just the ticket...for some reason I have Goldie Locks and the 3 bears going through my head

Schwing!!! Looks good man! Looking forward to the first spool up. I've been slowly pluggin away on my project but it's been slow due to my crazy travel schedule. Trying to get a bunch done before Dalton as well.

Thanks guys. After I got the mechanics mounted and the TRG installed I couldn't resist putting the main and tail rotor blades on just to see how it looked...

Don't know the exact weight of the blades but they are pretty heavy and they actual droop a little, which is cool

Weighed mine today and they are 340g -each so very close to yours but mine are carbon fiber not aluminum. They are 960mm x 64mm and are essentially flat bottom with a slight S profile. I ordered them from Heli-tec in Germany. I've heard their blades perform really well and I must say their service was very good. Can't wait to try them out.Thumper

So I noticed when I had the blades installed that the carbon fiber and plywood laminated mounting plate for the mechanics flexed quite a bit even with aluminum angles bolted to it on both sides for the length of the mechanics. This did not look good and I had visions of mechanics and fuselage separating mid-flight in a spectacular display of destruction!

So I removed the carbon fiber & ply plate, which looked like this...

And decided to tryout my new mini mill from Little Machine Shop...

And this is what I wound up with. Its significantly heavier by almost 200g but is much more rigid and will should not flex. It will be bolted into the fuselage at three locations to aluminum angles that runs across the fuselage and are attached to bulkheads.

This is a significant weight penalty but will be worth its weight if it prevents the earlier vision I had. Looking back I don't know what I was thinking when I made the initial mounting plate it only weighs 90g but is no where near up to the job. But hey that's all part of the learning process and reminds me to think my decisions through. Trial and error, just glad my error was discovered on the bench and not at the flying field.

I received the batteries the other day, two 6S 10,000MhA packs for the flight batteries. To my surprise they fit under the race car cowling just forward of the mechanics. This will be a much easier place to mount them instead of the original plan to but one vertically between and just aft of the pilot seats and the other one under the cowling.
