Blade 180 CFX just too hot for me to handle.
If my 180 cfx was a Trex 700 I could have filled up a three cubic yard dumpster with broken parts over the last year of use. And probably had to take out a second mortgage to pay for them.

I just wanted a nice machine I could fly around in the street in front of my house, but this monster is not it. Too much cyclic, too much collective, too impossible to smoothly land, too much forward speed.

Stick bangers rejoice this is your bird. Sport flyers, forget it unless you are going to fly it at large park or AMA field.

Believe it or not, my Heli-Max Black Hawk has served my front yard needs very well. It is a great flyer, looks terrific, and I have had to replace only the elevator fin at the tail in flying it many times over the last year. Of course, you have to split the thing apart completely to replace that elevator.

Sometimes you just have to say good bye to something that it not working for you. Bye bye 180.

Why not simply turn the head speed down? Or the cyclic? Or the collective? Or add more expo?

There are lots of ways to tame a heli down.

Stock config is very hot esp in Idle 2. Reduce the agility item in the Advance Settings to 80, turn the dual rates in your tranny down to about 80%, get a Castlelink to turn the head speed down to the low 4s, and maybe turn the pitch curve down a little. Any FBL model regardless of size can be made too hot, and any model out there can be made as tame as a kitten. The model is not the problem.

Get a Blade 230S if you want a good small park/backyard basher. Seriously. They got it right with that motor tail because it just works. Holds great and zero wag in a hover as with previous motor tail helis. It's like a big toned down 180CFX, not a bigger version of granddaddy's mCPX. Much lower headspeed than the 180CFX, so it's less intimidating in small spaces. It's still very capable, though, and I've included a video below of what it can do stock out of the box in capable hands. I also have a 180CFX and, as you know, it's a bit much for small spaces with the very high headspeed. It's quick and it gets away fast, but I love it for the flying field. I can fly the 230S in my backyard all day long doing flips, practicing inverted, piro moves, etc. 6+ min flight times on cheapo Turnigy 1000mAh batteries. Stupid simple design, too. Very crashworthy and no concerns about tail vibes after fixing it.

You'd think so, but the 180CFX is a pig for its size. It needs that high headspeed due to the high disk loading. It has zero float and lowering the headspeed makes it even worse.

The tail motor sounded a bit weird like it was wagging but I didn't see the tail wag. too much gain ?

can you put longer blades on the 180 ?

It's a tail motor heli, not belt or TT. That fast whirring sound you heard was the brushless tail motor spinning up and down very quickly to account for torque changes. There was no tail wag and that's why you didn't see any. The tail on the 230S works very, very well. Mine is rock solid and feels just like a CP tail. I was honestly surprised at how crisp piro stops are in both directions. Zero bounce back or mushy sliding through the stop. I never even touched the gains on the tail even though you can adjust the PID gains. All I did was up my rates and lower EXPO from the settings in the manual because they were too soft.

Speaking for myself I always thought the 180CFX was ok but not necessarily quick. Mine is actually really stable at 5K HS. The FBL controller keeps it nicely locked in. It's even more locked in at slightly lower headspeeds.Part 107.

Ok. I took it down to 3900 rpm in FM-3. That is the lowest you can go and still have a governor. Is that OK, or should I go lower and give up the governor?

There is an adapter plug for the Talon's throttle lead. Then it just works like any CC ESC.

I use the 180 for complex angle practice. I could give two sh..ts if it has a high disk loading, and I don't have to turn it at Mach 1 to extract what I need from it. Like anything else I own, I trim and tune to suit my expectations. Some may think the 180 is not hot enough, but since the OP has a different idea, there are ways to help him out.

You could drop a pinion size if they are available? Try it at 3900 and lower the cyclic dual rates and see how you like it. You could try heavier main blades if they are available?60% of the time, it works every time!

I have also lowered the PID gain from 100 in all four, down to 80.

This should be a different beast when next I try it out.

P I D values should be left stock because they tune consistency and stops and do not really make the model "hotter". Defaults there aren't bad. The fourth value after the PID tones down the aggressivenss off center along with your dual rates and expo.

I forgot about using the 1 tooth smaller Lynx pinion. That helps efficiency a good deal.

Ok, Ben. So I have these values now:
A 100
B 100
L 100
R 80

Castle Talon Flight Mode 3 3900rpm (my usual flight mode)

On Aileron and Elevator I have
Dual Rate.....75% 75%
Expo..........30% 30%
In all flight modes.

Let me know if this is a good starting point.
