AMA is NOT looking out for the hobbyist.
What is your group doing to "look out" for us?

May I ask how you, RayJay, are doing more for us than the AMA?

Just curious.

THE AMA does a lot of lobbying with congress and the FAA and the FCC. When I started flying RC, there was exactly one frequency available 27.255 MHz. THE AMA got us RC guys 72 MHz channels which I used for 40 years. Ever been shot down by a synthesized (E.F. Johnson tube) CB transmitter ? They used to stop by the field, scan for the frequency, then shoot us down just for fun.

You too can get AMA membership for $1199 at BEST BUY
Been AMA since 1963 and just renewed again at the new higher dues rate of $75 smackers.
But this morning walked out got the Sunday newspaper at 0330, put on the coffee and sat down to read. The Sunday add section contains a few of my must check sections. Opened the "BEST BUY" section to see what goodies and do-dads might be on sale and there on a top third of a page was a high end Yuneec Quadcopter for $1199.
Geez it's bad enough my local camera shop is selling DJI PHANTOMS but now BEST BUY has jumped on the bandwagon.
BUT HERE'S THE KICKER. Buy it and get FREE AMA MEMBERSHIP.
52 years in AMA and I never got offered FREE AMA MEMBERSHIP, all I get is sign up fast before the DUES INCREASE or FORK OVER 2 YEARS WORTH OF DUES and save a few bucks. Explains how dues went from $58 to $75 per year.
I KNOW DRONES are causing all of us rotorheads, plankers, freeflight, glider guys no end of BIG GOV HEADACHES, but do we have to finance it too in the slimmest of hopes of pulling a few of these potential nitwits into the AMA club and rules world so they fly under 400ft away from restricted airspace?
If AMA can give away memberships, why are we paying for a dues increase? Oh I can hear the OBAMA ERA types saying, it doesn't cost us anything to gain potential new members to educate them so we don't lose our flying privileges. Cheap insurance for our future. More like protecting their jobs in Muncie, that organization has grown pretty large since their days at the Reston VA facility. Over 55 employees just on the phone list. I can tell you, one can operate a $250M LNG tanker with a $40M cargo with half that number or a $500M military transport with a $4B military cargo with less than that also.
I'm a fan of AMA and all they do, but this time I think they've taken the members for granted.
1050 BEST BUY stores in USA, let's say they each sell 2 quadcopters. In theory AMA just gave away about $157K in dues risk.
I'd be amazed if they got 10% renewals from that fleet of 2100 new prospects.
So is AMA giving away membership, or is Yuneec or Best Buy paying to get FEDS off of their plate and on to ours? Anyone hear about this BEST BUY deal before it hit the papers? Did AMA get any money for this, maybe to use in their fight with the FEDS/FAA?

I just got an e-mail this morning from Dick's Sporting Goods. They are now selling drones and the parts that go with it. I couldn't believe it so I went to their website and typed in "drone" in the search box. Here we go.....

Will this be next? "For a limited time, every McDonald's Happy Mean will have a drone in it! Kids! Ask your parents to take you to McDonald's for lunch TODAY!"

Dialarotor, you have no idea who is paying for the AMA that Best Buy is giving away, neither do I. Before going on a rant, why not email or call someone on that 55+ phone tree and ask the question?Nick Crego

Here it is right from the AMA. Our club president sent an email to our AMA rep.

Good job by Beat Buy and the AMA.
The explanation and clarification as promised. Spread the facts not rumors and educate those who don't understand. Thanks. Follow the thread from bottom to top with Jeff Nance's response at top.

Hi Daren,

Here are answers to your questions starting with Best Buy. If you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best regards,
Jeff

BEST BUY

How did AMA and Best Buy Marketing Partnership Happen?

Best Buy approached the AMA with interest in packaging complimentary AMA memberships with the purchase of a qualifying multi-rotor (drones).

Why did Best Buy Contact the AMA?

Drones are now a mass market product. Drones are going to be the top selling gift this Christmas. While Best Buy wants to capitalize on the demand for drones, they feel an obligation to do so responsibly by educating their customers about model aircraft safety rules and the Academy of Model Aeronautics.

Why Did the AMA Agree to this Marketing Partnership with Best Buy?

For years, the AMA has been educating new people to the model aviation hobby about safe and responsible model flying. AMA clubs, members, websites, social media, manufacturers and our hobby shop retail partners are all ways we work together educate new people coming into the hobby. Best Buy is a new partner that understands the need and importance of educating new people about safe and responsible model flying. AMA's efforts in helping educate this new community of enthusiasts benefits all our members.

Did the AMA Give Best Buy Free Memberships?

No. Best Buy will pay the AMA for every membership redeemed through an activation process via a special AMA membership enrollment page. AMA is only paid if a customer redeems the membership. Also, Best Buy customers can purchase AMA memberships for $75 without buying a qualifying drone. For years, the AMA has had a similar program with hobby shops where they can sell AMA memberships.

How is Best Buy and AMA Educating People About the Model Aircraft Safety Rules?

At the drone product displays in Best Buy stores there are brochures for customers titled, "AMA We're Your Guide to Responsible Flying." In addition, the brochure promotes the AMA and the "Know Before You Fly" campaign. "Know Before You Fly" education materials will also be included in the packaging of each qualifying multi-rotor.

Before a customer can redeem their membership at the enrollment page, they must accept the five most important model aircraft safety rules before their membership can be processed. In addition, customers are urged to read the entire AMA National Model Aircraft Safety Code with a link provided.

1.) Keep your drone within eyesight at all times. 2.) Fly no higher than 400 feet. 3.) Remain well clear and do not interfere with any manned aircraft operations. Contact the airport or before flying within five miles of an airport. 4.) Never intentionally fly over unprotected persons or moving vehicles, and remain at least 25 feet away from individuals and vulnerable property. 5.) Do not fly over private property without permission.

DUES INCREASE

Here is link to information on why there was a dues increase. http://www.modelaircraft.org/membershipfaqs.aspx

REDUCED RATE MEMBERSHIP

We have a three month trial membership for $19.95 that makes for a great incentive to test drive AMA.

Jeff if you could answer the questions below from the original email id appreciate letting my members and others know where AMA is on these valid questions and concerns/ suggestions.

Thanks,

A member was recently in Best Buy and posted this photo (photo from original post)

The initial reactions have been "encouraging" and a good thing. However a post brought up a great question; "Why do I need to spend $75 on this?" Which will likely be asked by every non AMA quad buyer. Are the salespeople knowledgable enough to give good reasons? Or will they echo the sentiment with "no you really don't"?
Q- Why did dues jump so much? I suspect to cover lobbying costs brought on by the whole "drone"(hate that word in reference to models and quads- thanks media!) issue.

Q- Has it been considered to include a 1 year membership with the purchase at a reduced rate or even a limited membership for free? This may "grab" a market that doesn't feel the need or are not being forced to join.

I'd like to hear and / or share the AMA response to these questions. I think they are valid feedback for the organization to consider if the real goal is to stem (pun intended!) the tide of careless and unsafe use of RC models by uniformed, untrained, uninsured and un regulated individuals.
Thanks,
Daren Hudson

Not to worry Eury
BTW, I did write the AMA and expect an answer anytime. Also, if I didn't rant you wouldn't have posted what you did. Now we all see it. I read model aviation pretty thoroughly and that much information certainly hasn't been concisely put in as compact an explanation. So thanks for the post. We should know a whole lot more about all this drone fallout by Nov 20th.

"If AMA can give away memberships"

You're claims are BS.

A "straw man" position....like the politicians.

It's clear that you are not an AMA member.

I was already AMA 13 years before you were born and competing in NATS and FAI team events. You seem to not like my style of stirring the pot, tough.
You don't like my post and questions to AMA, don't read them.
