THROTTLE CURVE FOR SCALE
Do you have a recomendation for throttle curve settings for scale? Do you still want a flat curve? Still getting used to flying so I would like to adjust it now to see how it handles before I put it in the fuselage.

I personally use the Castle RPM governor on my Castle ESC, so I have consistent headpseed the entire flight. Easy to program and setup with the Castle Link.Steve

Yep...I like to set at least 2 ( and usually all 3) in flight modes for different conditions.. IE normal: spool-up, idle 1: normal flying, idle 2: + 50 rpm for windy and or low air density situations...(bailout)Home of the "Sea Cobra".....

I fly scale and have set all my helis using my radio curves. I try to keep things as simple as possible. Less electronics, less weight, less problems. You need to adjust each heli as they all fly a little different. I'd post flight video but haven't tried yet.

Another vote for the Castlelink "Set RPM" governor - couldn't be easier, just input the correct parameters (gearing & pole count), and type in whatever rpm you want for each mode. Then set the Tx curves to;

N - 0, 30, 30
ST1 - 70, 70, 70
ST3 - 100, 100, 100

Job done (it probably takes 3-5 minutes), and it will maintain your chosen speeds right through the flight (assuming you have left enough headroom) unlike throttle curves.

I use the same as Colin, except for normal... there I have 0-0-0 as a safety..
Set hold and turn it on when you arm the heli. Switch to idle up one or two, and when ready to start, turn hold off, let it spool up and go fly.

Governor
Once you set/use the governor (rpm set) option, you'll never use throttle curves again. As for what rpm, I like to go as low as possible without causing any head oscillations nor mushy feeling. Mark

No really good reason to need 3 speeds on a scaler.

I've got to get a Castle kit ordered so I can program it, just haven't done that yet.
I've also got to understand better what the govenor does. Would it not be the same as setting the throttle curve flat at the rpm that you want to fly in?

A governor automatically adjusts the throttle to maintain a specific head speed from start of flight to end of flight (assuming it is set up properly and your machine is geared properly). So you have consistent flight characteristics from start of flight to end of flight.

Setting a flat line throttle curve, you will have a faster headspeed at the beginning of the flight because the batteries are fully charged, but as the batteries drain during the flight, the head speed will fall, so at the end of the flight, your headspeed will be quite a bit slower than when you started the flight, because the batteries are not fully charged.

No it won't. Setting a flat line on a throttle curve will not hold a set rpm because you will be changing the load on the motor when you increase or decrease pitch. It would be like you holding your foot on your gas petal of your car and not moving it while you are going uphill or down hill....your speed will change. But when you use your cruse control, a computer monitors the speed you set it to and increases or decreases your throttle to hold that speed and that's what a ESC governor does, it acts as a cruse control for your heli.

By the way, there are other ESC's out there other then Castle that have governors. But I feel that Castle's have the easiest and fastest setup when using their laptop option. Mark

Imagine a 90% flat throttle curve and a 3s lipo and a 2800kV motor & 10:1 gearing

The lipo starts at 12.6V (although briefly), so 90% of 12.6V = 11.61V, so it will give you 11.61 x 2800 / 10 = 3250rpm

Now when the lipo is fairly flat, it will be around 11.1V, so 90% of 11.1 = 9.99V, so it will give you 9.99 x 2800 / 10 = 2797rpm, which is 453 rpm (or 14%) less than at the start of the flight.

This difference in headspeed will change how the heli flies and responds meaning that you are constantly adjusting your flying to changing conditions.

If you set your governor correctly to 2800rpm, it will maintain the 2800rpm from start to finish, meaning it should fly much more consistently throughout the flight. The only variable (apart from wind etc) is changing pitch, so you fly on pitch alone).

Castle used to include a voucher for a free Castlelink USB adapter with each ESC - not sure if they still do.

No because you set the speed to match the likely speed at the end of the flight, so you fly the entire flight at the "lowest" speed, not start at a higher speed and slow down to a lower speed.

Rpm = kV x (#of cells x 3.7v) x 0.9 x pinion teeth / main gear teeth = rpm at 100% towards the end of the flight.

Then you pick a governor speed generally between 90-95% of this speed, and use that as your set rpm speed.

You are not aiming for a "high" headspeed with a governor, just a constant one.
