This current ad from tower has a *great* deal on the Futaba 14sg.

Plus the newest version of the Kaos-60 which is a nice flying airplane.

On the other side I was stunned to see the new Hubsan X4 costs more than a Typhoon 4k - and the Typhoon comes with a case and two battery packs (plus the nice ST10+ and 4k CG03)

and to add gasoline to the hate fire - Tower doesn't differentiate between heli's and quads (same shopping category)

Actually, if you fly planks, they have a lot of stuff. It is just that our specific section of the hobby is so narrow that only a few specific merchants support it.
Tower was never really focused on Helis... Years ago they where better but the only major brands of serious helis they ever carried that I recall where Kyosho and Thunder Tiger.

+1 For fixed wing pilots - especially builders - they are probably the best of the huge retailers. I have spent literally 10s of thousands of dollars there over the last 20 years or so. But I am a kit builder and Futaba guy so they have a lot of what I need - especially building materials, wood, tools, glue, etc. Using super saver coupons I have got screaming deals on lots of things and they have the biggest selection of builders kits of any major retailer.

By comparison I never liked horizon... Nothing but ARFs, horrible site navigation, few sales and deals like happen all the time at tower. The only thing I used horizon for regularly was Saito engines and the occasional JR servo but even those I could get cheaper at other dealers.

My one gripe with Tower/Hobbico is that they have a bad habit of buying out and killing off great old brands - like Goldberg, etc.

I think we need to understand that Quads are to helis as helis were to planks.!(Plankers didn't really like helis and Heli pilots don't really like quads.)
I would say yes and no. Drones are drawing people away from helis for sure but the difference is that helis never where a bigger segment of the hobby than fixed wing. Drones are getting bigger than both. In fact it would not surprise me if the drone market is bigger, much bigger, than all of traditional RC combined was in the hayday when AMA had close to 200k members.

Quads more and more popular
I think some reasons are that quads can be flown just about anywhere, are easy to fly. inexpensive compared to some models.
crash cost are low. + they haven't killed anyone yet.

spending time, paying attention

To me, drones are just the next cars (and trucks and buggies). If you put all of this in historic perspective, there is nothing new going on here.

15 years ago, helicopters were very nearly non-existent. They were a fringe at best and hated at most field. In the years since they have ether blossomed - or trashed the hobby, depending on your perspective.

Going back 30 years ago Tamiya introduced the Subaru Brat and Frog. Viola! The car industry was born. Before that there was only old men that knew how to sand balsa. I once met a person that had the opportunity to see a shipment being offloaded at one of the US distributors. Looking at the new shipment he asked what is that mountain of boxes? He was told those are the latest shipment of radios. Next to it was a very much smaller pile. He asked what are those? He was told those are the air use radios - the multi-story pile of radios are 3 channel surface use radios. Most hobby shops will tell you that if it were not for cars (and crafts) they would have been out of business long ago.

Drones today. Something else tomorrow. Adapt or die.

RC today
Planes and Helis are not being replaced by Quads. I fly/race quads and still need my fix of LOS plank/heli flight. Going today to fly my 700s. Will have my FPV gear with me. 2 totally different worlds. But it is RC and people are joining clubs because of it. If the clubs don't grow with the hobby they will die out.

Its all RC...boats, cars, planes, helps, rockets. Toys each one.

These are the things that keep me young and happy. Enjoy your toys and fly. No need to fester over a hobby.

Going fly. Will check on you guys when I get back.
