I left the hobby in 2008 and a lot has changed. Had to support another hobby by order of our wonderful court system and I am almost there but not quite.

I am going to start all over, not sure what heli or electronics so this is where my RR friends come in support of restarting over.

Thanks for your inputs in advance.

What did you fly in the past? How did you fly in the past? Hard 3D with electrics or just hovering with a Raptor .30? Electrics or glow? Were you learning or more advanced.

Do you have any equipment from the last go-around?

Is there anyone around you flying? What are they flying? Local help and knowledge can be a BIG help.

Why is this off topic?

I don't know that many people are seeing this.

Hi Girard,

I think we met a while ago, but my friend Tom and I still fly helis at the TRCC field most Sundays. You should come out. Tom flies a Gaui X3, Logo 480 Xtreme, and a Synergy E5. I am currently flying a SAB Goblin 380. We should be back out there again next weekend.

Thanks,

Brent

Batteries have become much more affordable. Servos have become much higher performance. FBL has become main stream. Nothing like the newest class of electric 700's. They are superb fliers, and there's plenty of selection.

Nitro is virtually dead (I fly nitro too, so no flaming, please). Thunder Tiger gave it up completely. Be prepared for a loss of the aftermarket and ever increased fuel cost if you want back into nitro. I won't rebuild my current engine or nitro model.

For $600 now, you can buy the latest 700 size airframe (Protos Maxv2)with an FBL controller included.

You must not have been at IRCHA, seems like at any time over half the flight line was flying nitro

Indeed. And I fly it as well. But look at this from a higher level...The aftermarket has discontinued most products we used to be able to get. Just try buying header tanks, fuel fittings, and such. Sure, there's product out there in terms of a few engines and models. But not nearly what there was even a few years ago. A lot of guys bring stuff out at IRCHA...I've never believed that this event is all that representative of what is going on in the hobby. It's just not growing. Regardless, my point is to do some research before jumping back in to the hobby via the glow heli segment. Many lines, clunks, pipes and engines are no longer available.

I too wouldn't say nitro is dead. It may be down, but I wouldn't tell anyone it is dead.

The OP noted that he is or was a fan Thunder Tiger. The rumors at the moment are that TT is getting back into the nitro market. There are several threads to that effect i.e. https://rc.runryder.com/t795250p1/ The X50 and Titan are is showing shippable. http://www.thundertiger.com/product...p?id=40&lang=en

Mat and Amy at Synergy are making some of the finest nitro kits ever offered. http://synergyrchelicopters.com/models/synergy-n7/

While Great Planes has decided to stop importing the nearly perfect OS .37 (I suspect because of a turf war with Gaui), the OS .55 and 1.05 are still available and are fantastic engines. YS is as present as ever.

Fuel continues to be a problem for many. It can be expensive and the few remaining hobby shops can't afford to stock fuel like they used to.

Is nitro as dominant as it once was? Of course not. There are too many other competing options and too many new heli pilots just passing through. To them, electric is a pretty easy choice.

Model helis in general have declined since the introduction of self-flying multi-rotors. I wouldn't go so far as to say helicopters are dead. In decline - Yes. Dead - No.

I agree with most ever thing you said. The exception being TT glow models. TT clearly announced discontinuation of all their model helis except for the e700V2, e550, and e360. You simply can't come back to nitro Raptors right now, except to buy used models, and parts is still sketchy at best. And they've left very misleading information indicating their availability.

The two links above are showing a "Buy Now" button. Those are the X50 and the Titan 50SE. It appears you can add to cart and check out. I will concede that I have not purchased from this site and I can't guarantee you will ever receive a helicopter. I will admit that there is every possibility you will immediately receive an email saying they are not producing these kits.

I can say I've order quite a few parts for my existing Raptors from Heli-Kraft. They have had every part I ever wanted - get 'em in about 10 days. My Raptors are older and I don't see where they are selling G4.1 parts. Still, it looks like they support the nitro helis currently listed for sale at Thunter Tiger. http://heli-kraft.com/index.php?rou...ategory&path=96

Finally as I noted in the below thread, I don't know if I could recommend Thunder Tiger right now. Until they figure out what they really want to do, there are better choices. https://rc.runryder.com/t795693p1/
And they've left very misleading information indicating their availability.
Here we are in complete agreement!

Best wishes Don S. I know I put one modeler in a great position with parts and a like-new airframe.

I'd like to hear what Girard is thinking he'd like to do...

What am I thinking, well I still have the old Raptors and 72 mhz. Gonna get them back in the air for now and get my crusty old fingers moving again. Not sure when, but I am still not out of the woods. I can still feel a cool breeze coming my way and looking forward to getting back in the air.

Me too
I was huge into heli's. I think I have known Jerry (Girard) for a decade. I am looking to get back into he hobby also. Let's get out to TRCC soon. The boat is put up for the season and I am skipping hunting season this year. I still have my Jet's and my last Aeroworks but all my heli stuff is all junk by what's out there now.

Give me call and let's see who all is flying and get some stick time.

I would not even know where to start with electrics. I talked to Steve and he said there are some guys out there on Sunday's.

Yeah, my buddy Tom and I are the ones that go out on Sundays. We are the only two heli pilots at TRCC.

Wow
I remember the days when sun afternoon was dominated by helis. 12-15 some pilots. Billy and Chip Hyde and Jason Krause were regulars. sounds like the miniatures have killed the big birds. This whole quad copter thing seems like a mess. I don't see much "thumb" skill needed to fly them. Even Steve on the board used to fly heli's. Does Catalina still have a Heli crowd?
