Not heli related, but I wanted to get opinions on this. On my local club forum I was told it is unpatriotic to own a model of a German ME109 because it is a model of a former enemy of the US. This seems 100% bat**** crazy to me. Am I the only one?

Do these folks use any German made products? Japanese?

I don't have a problem with it, others might.

It falls on the "who cares what other people think" category. That's the problem with some clubs, and can lead to some members leaving said clubs with a bad overall view of this hobby. Big overgrown children still playing their high-school bullying game.

You have the right to buy whatever you like and fly it, or drive it. If the club doesn't like it then call em out on it and join another club.

Enjoy the little things in life, they make the big ones more enjoyable.

Oh, I didn't want to give the impression that I care what he thought. It was more that I couldn't believe what I heard and wanted to get other people's thoughts on it.

There were a few (old)guys who complained about a flying zero in our area. I was nothing but impressed.
This was from walking onto the tarmac to my plane one morning. Fricken awesome.

Well, if it is unpatriotic to own a FW109, then buy a FW190 to go with it. Make sure that you display the gammadion cross on the tail.

History is to be experienced, and there is no finer way than to fly German aircraft.

Thats whats nice about fourms.....any idiot can have an opinion. If he was in WWII he may be a little set in his thinking. Its a model airplane. Now if its was a real FW109 flying overhead attacking your flying field.....that would be unpatriotic .

Unless they fly Fox or K&B motors and an Orbit radio, I'd tell them to take a look in the mirror.

wabbit,
You said it all in your comment. What is it with old people and their attitude. , and before you guys start I am about to turn 68 and when old guys like what the OP was describing start I go off on them.
The club that I belong to has a reputation for crothity old farts and because of it the club has suffered over the years for it. They don't like helis , but the way I look at it I paid my money and I am going to fly my helis and if they don't like it they can go to hell.

Flying a model representative of a piece of history does not mean you support or agree with what was done at that time by countries who are no longer our enemies. I run fairly right of center, but what you were told is BS.

When I was about 9 yrs old around 1948 (3 yrs after WWII) we had this german family move to this country. The father was a german airplane designer and had much to do with the ME109, so he (and his family) were brought to Wright Patterson AFB. They had a son my age and we became good friends.
One day Peter took me in his house and was proudly showing me all the airplanes his dad designed. In my head I was saying "'holy crap, these were planes that killed my American pilots, and he is proud of this !!"
Anyway I eventually got over it and realized that his father was simply caught up in the war and was not a nazi. After all, look at Wernher Von Braun (designer of the V2).
Yes, the ME109 was an enemy plane, but it was an incredibly beautiful designed plane for it's time.

I think about the hereafter. I go somewhere to get something, then wonder what I'm here after ?

It reminds me of all the furor made over the stars and bars confederate rebel flag. Symbols and flags are powerful references to history and ideas. Taking it down does not erase the memories.

By banning either, it does not make history go away. It could spark a discussion of those times. You cannot make people evil for following the leadership of their country.

History is written by the victor.

flack about me109
As a kid (1959-1965) Werner Von Braun lived across the ally from us. He had three daughters and a dough boy style pool.We didn't care if he invented death itself but the fact is we were all unaware of his exploits
till after he and his family moved away. I still miss that pool.

Second that.

Sporting any RC model replica has nothing to do with political ideology or siding with an enemy group in the war era. They are all gone anyway.

Time for them to grow up.

I would not own any Axis model from WWII out of respect for my parents who grew up in England through this war and my Dad who was drafted immediately after for the occupation in Europe. They do not have good memories of this period in life.

This is a part of our history and I have no issue with these models or the real thing for that matter. Love seeing the Confederate Air Force planes. Consider the source of the complaint and evaluate from there but don't let some fool decide what you can fly.

Quick! Hit the brakes!

Junkpilot,

Werner Von Braun was your neighbor?! Too bad no cellphones back then, you could of had a selfie with the father of our space program. Of course at that age, I would have been more worried about the pool too! For anyone reading, I haven't forgotten about Robert Goddard, he's like the granddaddy of our space program.

Rpat,

I think those guys are jealous of you. We take for granted flying a Heli and landing intact. Keep showing them how it's done!
