I tried a new product that worked for keeping no-seeums away from my face this weekend; it's been pretty hot here and the little Bas@#&ds have been out early; it's called "BugBand" insect repellant band..you can fasten it on your wrist or put it on your belt; I put it on my flyin hat and I didn't have one critter get on my face this weekend! I got it a local outdoor/camping store. it's supposed to be good for 120 Hrs. of protection if you put it back in the airtight container that comes with it; it costs $4.00. the last couple of weeks without it just about every flight a bug would land on my face and start biting.

I do a great decending funnel!

Jay I feel ya with these gnats. Getting on your face, in your ears. I can't think of a bigger distraction. Maybe my face is too sensitive but I swear they feel like crap.

The key is in avoiding flights near sunset. Their activity is highest then.

Up here in the NorthEast we get those pesky little horse flies that like to bite the back of your legs while flying. Good post and good tip.

Nitro helis helped to keep the bugs away. The other thing that you need to do is buy an Unscented or Fragrance free soap and aftershave.
And for any reason use cologne
It will help a lot, not 100% but 80% helped me.

2 or 3 nitros doing smokey hovering a few times and hour.
More nitro, big smoke. Get a few gassers and add citronella to the camper fuel.
Charge lipos while smoke hovering those old 50 & 90 flybar ships we all have. Work on that nose in and inverted hovering, can't 3D all the time.

It works great. I have been using it locally but just last week I really gave it a test at Shenandoah National Park. We went to an evening Ranger talk outdoors and my wife attracts mosquitoes and bugs like you can't imagine.

We sat down at the bench, lit up a Themacell and in 5 mins. all the bug buzzing her were gone! I would say it created an approximately 10-15 diameter zone. Winds were calms so it didn't blow the stuff away. Then again if it was windy enough to blow the stuff away it would also ground the bugs.

Good stuff! And no Deet to wash off later (or potentially damage any plastics that you touch).

follow up on the "bug band"
Well..I used one of these things pinned to my flyin hat all summer! I followed the instructions and put it back in the supplied container after each flying session..just about every weekend since I first posted; it worked really good for every bug except a horse fly that got in my face one morning..but I give it a solid thumbs up!

I do a great decending funnel!
