anyone else have problems with the open tail gearbox where the output shaft (to the tail rotor) breaks off at the spot that the output gear set screws lock into the shaft? I had the whole t/r asm balanced and I used locking compound where the shaft go thru the bearing.

I would ask the new owners of Min Air and ask for replacement parts or the conversion to the closed housing tail. Now would be the time to do it! They are making parts,,,

Setup is everything, All my heli's can fly far better than I can pilot them

If my mind servers me,,, I think the open tail on the Gas didn't work out, and MA did a replacement with the solid tail,, You might ask them about that,,, XGM/VGM

the problem with the open tail on the spectra had to do with a run of output shafts that were hardened to a rockwell level above where it was supposed to be

when they got shafts with the correct spec it worked fine

Carey is correct, they replaced the shaft and there were no problems. Still running on my Spectra.

No you haven't lost your mind

the actual problem wasn't identified for some time.

originally the problem was believed to be related to the gear pin hole location in the output shaft being affected by additional vibration. that couldn't be easily fixed however the closed box had a different configuration and didn't have any sort of failure history like that. so the kit config was changed to use it instead.

meanwhile the shaft was common to other models and the problem eventually showed up there as well. A lot of detail testing finally identified the rockwell problem.

The kit was never revised even though the problem was unrelated to the actual design.

I just got a Spectra-G and I do not trust that plastic tail. So which is the best upgrade? The open tail or the solid tail?

Hi Ronald,

I just wanted to mention that I have been flying the plastic tail on my Spectra for four years and it has been great and I've had no issues.

I understand if you do want to upgrade though.

I might have open tail gears. shoot me a pm if u still need it.
as for my o p I'm going to use the closed tail gearbox when I eventually rebuild the Heli. the stand off for the aileron bell crank to swash broke in flight and I almost got it down when it went pretty negative 3ft from the ground just as I switched to throttle hold. so I got some rebuilding to do

Flyinfriend,
I got this heli second hand and the tail appears to be brittle from over tightening so I want to be sure. I found a closed tail of so I am good

the closed or (SE) Tail is the best overall that I have found, It does add a tad bit of weight, but once setup properly, will last for many years of tinker free flying,, XGM/VGM
