Back before gyros when a successful takeoff, circuit, and landing meant you were a bada$$.

LOL the good old days - glad they are over. I think we have more fun, now!

Is cool to see the history though, to appreciate what our tech brings us.

wonder what 1st, 2nd and 3rd place looked like...

1st place: flew a circuit and landed with no damage.
2nd place: managed to hover and land with no damage.
3rd place: got the main blades to spin under engine power...

the flight routines and power advances sure have followed an logarithmic curve.

showing a preference will only get you into trouble, 90% of everything is crap...

Looks like the pilots even had to work on their own helicopters, wow.

No more than 5 camera men were harmed in the filming of this production.

I have a 3D heli, I don't understand why it doesn't do 3D

Ah the good ol’ days of training gear and floats. Back then 3D would have been a successful hover…!!! Ha!

that Len and Dave vid was boss. You got to thank all the fans of rc helis who plugged away at many bench hours tweeking and fixing and whatever else went into those old dare I say dogs compared to today's lions, they were the pure bred beta testers, lol. Without them where would we be?

I suppose if you look at a lot of technology there's usually a ten year cycle of advancement.

That first vid is 60's for sure.

Sadly, Dave Passed away two weeks ago.

Why fly the rest when you can fly the best. What are the best these days anyway ?

Rgorham, watching a video of your flight when I was a kid and admiring my Dad's Competitor Pro hanging from the ceiling for many years growing up is one of the big reasons I am so addicted to RC helis these days. I still remember the day he brought home the kit. Flying is still tough, but it was a totally different story back in those days. Thanks for being one of the pioneers that really pushed this hobby. Looking at my dad's Cometitor now, the similarities are pretty amazing and very different at the same time comapred with today's modern helis.

in 1977 there were no gyros. I got my first Kraft mechanical gyro in 1980. ($50 US) Suddenly I could hover. It was very very difficult to fly without a tail gyro. There were folks doing rolls and loops back in those days as well, you just don't see that in these videos. I suspect not many had accomplished this pre 1980. We has switched invert, where you hit a switch to fly upside down, those who mastered the rolls and loops prob did fly inverted but you had to remember to hit the switch (reversing the travels where needed and switch when you flipped it upright.)

Funky Trex,

Thank you for the kind words and with the advancement of technology RC helicopters are a breeze to maintain and fly these days compared to the old days.

I'm sure relaxing and having fun with them!
