Yup. Actually, even simpler. My header/pipe is all one unit. And somehow it never cracked.

Do you "port" the header exhaust flange at all?

I grab the two long socket head screws that come with the muffler and bolt it on. Then I fly. LOL

You probably know how a "tuned pipe" works, right?

The pipe has a "baffle" at the "fat" end of the pipe before the pipe exhaust.

When the piston opens, the exhaust gases with the "acoustic shock wave" exit the engine's exhaust port....and when this shock wave hits the baffle, part of it is "reflected" back towards the engine's exhaust port.

As this reflection hits the engine's exhaust port just prior to the piston closing, the mixture is "turbo charged"....enhancing performance....

Consider this...

If the port of the exhaust flange is not matched to the engine's exhaust port, the mismatch results in "baffle".

As the engine's exhaust shock wave hits this "baffle", part of it is reflected back into the engine...at exactly the wrong time.

If you port the header, this doesn't happen, resulting in better performance.

True header/tuned pipe setups are a modern era rarity. Most of us are running "tuned mufflers" that are either one piece or have a bolt on fixed length header, and doing just fine at it.

There are MANY pipes that are specifically made for a certain make/model engine. Get the right model and the flange is the proper shape.

Hatori?
I asked a co-worker who's been flyin planks all his life..never heard of hatori
Not surprising... In the fixed wing world their major market was headers and pipes for 2 meter F3A competition pattern planes... mostly running large YS 4 stroke engines (the DZs) or big two strokes like the OS 140RX

Never saw one on a common sport plane like you might see at a local club field.

4 stroke engines
They had pipes, but they weren't "tuned".

The pipe tuning effect is only useful for 2-cycle engines.

On the 4-cycles, they were used to muffle the sound.

We'll still be able to fly, and still have engines, but maybe your particular favorite won't be the dominant one. But we'll still be able to fly. Which is what it is REALLY all about, isn't it?

I was mistaken, as I thought what this discussion was about....was Hatori and "tuned pipes" and "headers"....

Not much to say unless we want to talk about the reasons and how it's not the end of the world. Or we can hold a wake in Hatori's honor.

But I see no reason to hang on to what's lost.

Dude, the tuning of 2-cycle pipes is not gone.

And the understanding of how to tune a pipe is worth knowing.

But, as you say, Hatori is "kaput"....so you recommend that I simply throw away such knowledge....erase it from my brain...as if the technology is obsolete because of Hatori's demise?

Is that your recommendation?.....

Why would you say that?

Instead, after explaining how a tuned pipe exhaust system works, you yourself should start such a company....now you know how it works...

Don't you twist my words and visit such BS on me.

All you do is complain about this, that, and the other...offering no solutions and want others to provide this, that, and the other...to bemoan your assertion that nitro is gone.

You're on quite a roll tonight.

Unless someone is willing to start up a high end pipe company, there are no direct solutions. That's not being dreary. It's being realist.

So I offer up the only viable solution I see: go with another brand.
