Read the fine print. Windows 10 will NOT be available for download until July 29. It is a FREE upgrade. Clicking the icon in the taskbar will allow you to "reserve" your copy of Windows 10, and it will be available for download beginning July 29. There is the utility that will peek into your system and tell you if what hardware may not work with the upgrade.

Apparently Windows 10 is the "last" version of Windows that will be rolled out. From then on it is supposed to be simply incremental updates and upgrades.

I've been running the tech preview, I wouldn't recommend updating a significant system on day one.

Keep in mind however that doesn't imply the end of windows.. Rather they are switching to a service model like many web browsers use where they just keep rolling out changes incrementally - often without even asking - rather than doing occasional big bang "releases". My guess is that in the future anyone who buys windows just gets a disk with a small installer that connects to a server at MS and downloads whatever the current latest and greatest version is.

All past upgrades to a particular version were free, and automatic.

Windows 10 is free, as well. I don't believe incremental upgrades will come at added cost.

Maybe they have finally decided to charge what that steaming pile is actually worth - *nothing*!

Even then I don't want it . . . the price in grief and frustration is still far too high . . .

I am perfectly happy with Windows 7, and I am not a Windows basher. I will not be upgrading to 10 until its been out a while, free or not.

The upgrade may be free, but I'll bet you a dollar to a doughnut that you'll be paying money to keep it 'current'.There, their and they're. It's really that simple.

Nope.

They will probably be using adds and marketing little windows to pay for it

I wasnt aware of the rolling release cycle change. I find it odd since it may diminish the opportunity to glamourize a major release. With the recent open source offers from Microsoft there may also be changes to their price structure. Make no mistake, even if Win10 is a free upgrade they are still sticking it to the enterprise plenty hard.

More bloat, bigger footprint, and new selection of bugs is usually about it . . .

And myself, I'd pay money *NOT* to get adverspammed (well, if I ever was forced to run Windows . . ).

Smaller footprint.
Less bloat, but this may impact some users that made use of removed features.

Tim, stop giving them ideas.

7 is still the fastest for games.

The others just load a hair quicker, and have less bloat.

As having one hell of a sick gaming rig, no way I will update to 10 for a year or two.

By then 11 will be out lol

Microsoft is a software company that SELLS software. In particular they sell an operating system and an office suite. It is unclear to me how giving away the last operating system they will ever make for free will result in a profit.

There is a big part of the Windows 10 business model that I'm not being told. Up until this point I've always been told there is no such thing as a free lunch. I don't see anything to suggest that this will be any different.

Sorry for the negative waves but there is something missing here.

I'm getting amazed how many false statements are made here. Win10 will be the best for gaming for multiple reasons but mostly for directX12 alone which will probably be necessary for new games.

DO a bit more research and actually try the betas (I am/have)

Once Direct X 12 is out gaming will be much faster on a windows 10 PC. I clock NO difference at all between windows 7 and windows 8.1 running the exact same hardware with a fresh OS install and the same graphics drivers.

IF DX12 will be exclusive to windows 10 (which allot are thinking it will) then yes, gaming will definitely be faster on Windows 10. Couple that with limited XBOX integration, and social networking for gaming. The older generation doesn't care about the social aspect, but the new guys that are growing up...it's paramount. Just look at how successful twitch.tv has gotten.
