Other empirical witness: Folks at my field that fly planks until the power is weak get 50 cycles before puff.

They also keep them charged.

I try to teach them but what do I know, lol

At 3.8V, you might be leaving some flight time on "the table"...but if it results in more lifetime then that's a good method.

Heck, after 5 mins., I need a break....

EE- not to mention. It's a wash, time wise. You're that much faster to charge only going to 3.8V

Ok I' ll add my experiences with lipo.Been using lipo since 07.So many brands that I cant even remember but to name a few FMA,TP, Gens Ace,Performance plus,e flite, align, thor, turnigy, common sense, and several no name, everything from 1s 150mah to3s 900mah(blade cp) to 6s 3300 65 c.My first lipo charger(also 07) was a cellpro 4s so Ive also been charging at 2 and 3C + since then. This was back when guys SWORE anything but 1c charging would result in death and destruction...lol

I have had several lipos have usable power well past 200 cycles and enough for sport flying past that.
I charge the first few cycles at 1c and fly the first 2 or so flights easy.I also limit the first 2 or so flights time wise to about half. Give or take its not exact just a rough idea.

After that I fly normal and charge at anywhere from 1 to 3C,depending on the time and situation.
I wont let them sit more than overnight fully charged
I follow the 80% rule religiously
dont let them get too hot or cold and stay within manufacturer spec for discharge and you should enjoy plenty of flights from your lipos

That's very true....

That usually is the case for me, anyway....as the "adrenalin" rush has me beat after about 4 mins....so I land with batt. room to spare.

There's a table that shows what storage charge and temp do to battery life. It's astounding. I'll see if I can find it.

The author is a planker but we won't hold that against him.

Notice if you leave it charged around room temp it still loses 20% capacity loss in a year.

And the effect is cumulative. If you fly it, but charge after every flight, after one year, it'd be as though it were left charged for a year.

I just scanned the article(will read it better later)...but looked at the table....my question is this:

Seems like storing at batt with a full charge...the batt would self discharge and not have a full charge...at some rate of discharge.

His table extended through 1 year at full charge....wonder about his test procedure...

And, I used to be a planker...and still fly...and you just can't trust some of those guys....

No.

Key word: PERMANENT capacity loss.

We're not talking about self discharge.

LiPo has a very low self discharge rate. But don't let that fool you. That's NOT good. If it'd burn off it's own charge you'd see less damage. But fact is, it hangs on to that high damaging voltage for a very long time.

"His" test procedure was to copy/paste a table from Battery University.com, which is a very awesome site, BTW. The table is in the Lithium Ion section, but after doing some reading I came to the understanding that these principles apply to all Lithium chemistry batteries.

Current and qualified planker pilot, here. Working up a Venus 40 build.

Well, the author has devotion to his efforts....

I can't take the time to let a batt sit for a year...testing it's properties.

What I get out of the article is don't store LiPos at full charge...and I need to be more diligent...if I have batts charged after flying, I don't bother to discharge them.

In my case, have several batts that I charge at home before going to the field....don't like having to monitor charging at the field.

Like to socialize and stuff....we have BBQs...and even the helis get along with the plankers....we're all "weird"...

It's all a trade off. If you can afford to play, you can afford to pay. I "can" afford to, but I also enjoy maximizing my gains. To me, batteries are the lifeblood of the hobby. The more I take care of them, the more I can fly on a given amount of cash.
