Advice: Back in the hobby
Hi guys, about 10 years ago, I flew every day! I also used to be a member of RR under a name I don't remember anymore.

Fast forward to today, I am married, have a kid on the way, a job, and spend my spare time on the golf course. However, I have recently been re-bitten by the heli bug and would like to make a change in my fleet. I don't even know where to begin! Let me tell you what I currently have, what I would like to do, and please give me some advise on what how to accomplish this.

Current helis:

1 x raptor 90 se w/ YS .91
1 x Raptor 50v2 w/ OS .50 (Metal/carbon)
1 x raptor 50v2 w/ thunder tiger .50 (plastic heli I used for training)
1 x trex 450
GY401 x 2
GY601
2x Futaba 9CHP

Ultimately I would like to have a 2.4 Gz radio/receiver and a flybar-less gasser.

My two thoughts now are to either sell it all and try to buy a new Century gasser, or sell everything and convert my 90 to a flybar-less gasser. What do you guys think?

YES to the R90 gasser:
http://www.helibug.com/HB-TBRC.htm

NO to the Century. Make that a hell no.

FBL:
I think the R90 head can be easily convert to FBL with very little.
Or you can go this route:

http://www.gforceheli.com/item/G-Fo...ersion-Kit---37

Chose an FBL unit that can stand high vibrations like the Bavarian Demon, VBar full size, or the CGY750.

Radio:
Ditch the trusty-rusty 9C, and pick up a Futaba 14SG. or a 10Jh if you are on a budget.
The lag of a 9C is crazy huge, but you'll never know it until you fly a newer system.

good luck

The Raptor 90 makes an EXCELLENT gasser candidate when converted with the Helibug conversion. Please take a look through my gallery as I have completed two. Although I have not converted either to fbl (yet) I hear they make excellent candidates for that as well as Santiago said

I like the flybarless Raptor gasser idea, but I'm not sure what needs to be purchased.

other than the kits, what gyro am I looking for, and what engine/muffler would I need?

Go to the Helibug site and read the manual. Is actually very detailed w lots of photos.

The Helibug site goes in detail what engines, mufflers they recommend, etc.

You can convert the R90 SE to FBL using the TT E700 head assembly and main shaft. The parts are all on eBay. Should be about $140 total

I suggest the Spektrum DX9 as your 2.4Ghz radio.
It has all the features and is compatible with everything
I really like the telemetry features and the voice and the alarms

The FBL I used when I converted my R90SE to FBL was the Skookum SK-540 and it worked pretty well with the mCCPM (1-servo collective, 1 servo roll & 1 servo pitch).

Regardless of the FBL gyro, you have to do a lot of "outside the box" setting up for servo travels, directions and such. If there are "Setup Wizards" or setup menus, most will not work with the mCCPM. Be prepared for a learning curve (search this section to see my step by step process).

The OS GT15H is a "drop in" form factor fit for the YS 91SR.
But, it has about the same power output as the OS 70SX motor.
Don't expect hard, smackdown 3D flying. But, it will run 20 minutes on the 550ml tank

At the end of the day (after having two fully flying R90SE FBL conversions) I sold them and went to Align.
The Align Trex 700N is a good platform that is well supported.
Buying an older airframe can be inexpensive and easily converted to a Gasser. Or turbine. Or, YS 120SR-X
And parts availability is universal.
