Hi Steph,

Been watching the thread, Why not give mike a call? as I can see you are going to do irreparable damage to the turbine..

When the castings catch the edge there is real chance of damage to the vanes and knock the wheel out of balance.. If you are getting that kind of trouble at IDLE which is 33000 rpm then when you are at full load 135/140k your gonna cause significant damage.

I appreciate your trying to save some money doing it yourself and are a skilled machinist but the tolerances that are built into the wren are so minute..

My advice would be give Mike a call and ask him if you can pop up with the turbine in hand..

If you are not desperate wait for their open day where they will service in front of you for a minimal fee..

The reason I say this, is when you come to selling it if and when you do no one will touch it as you have modified it..

I am surprised Wren haven't helped, they have changed a lot since getting rid of MW54 but when I have met Mike and Leonie at trade shows they have always been helpful..

Hi Matt

Thanks for your reply
wren have been helpful as they sourced parts for the gearbox and supplied the ceramic bearings among other items the problem is they have not got a second stage turbine tunnel it has to be made and the only way to do this is to have the schematics so I have the information like end float and preload.

Mike did say he would dig out the schematics for the tunnel to send me but they have not arrived

I'm not a skilled machinist far from it I'm a hobbyist and yes you are right if its not totally right I'm probably going to do more damage than its worth

Its a long shot me getting this totally right but I thought I would give it a try

Matt,
When is Wren's open day?

Slightly off topic, but just got my Trex Wren 44 going and loving it so much I am after a scale turbine now.

10/10 for trying.. my post was not critism in any way, I just hate to see a fellow Wren flyer grounded..

Shame cos I just sold a second stage gear box for the predator, the guy doesn't want it he only wanted the gas generator part I am happy to send you his details if you wanna try that.

Hi Matt

None taken criticism that is I'm open to all suggestions

That would be great if he still has the gearbox and second stage it would save all the trouble and get my turbine flying again

One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet, do NOT run the turbine above idle without blades or some kind if load on the gearbox. You WILL overspeed the gearbox and tear it up...

Let me look in my wren spare parts bin and see if I have a tunnel. I don't think I do, but I'll check...

I do have a complete second stage, it's used but does work. It's the fuel lubricated version, not the oil filled one.

Hiya Chris

Yes that would total the gearbox you never run any heli up without a load on the head its a no no

You would be a life saver if you had a complete second stage

Progressing along I bored the tunnel to take a 18mm od and 16mm id to get a closer fit on the bearing as this was causing the turbine wheel to move and hit the side of the spider
All I need to do is wait for the 642 to set completely then face off to the required depth

Here's what it looks like.

I have 2 exhausts, one reversed, and that's my fan and drive hub on it, which I'll remove, along with the rear mount plate.

Well this is how it went first start failed due to fuel not been primed
Second start fired first time took a while to stabilise turbine sounded good clutch was dragging a little fine tune this later
everything sounded good a smile was starting to form on this old face then
smoke from the lagging around the second stage what the F is going on I thought or words to the effect
shut the turbine down and checked the temps on the data terminal 130c still smoking fire ext at the ready
Now scratching my head I started to think what's going on peeled back the insulation on the second stage and when I looked I thought bloody hell school boy error Dammmmmmm

Temp prob hole is at the bottom and fuel oil was leaking through to the lagging and you know the rest

Not good

This time I went for the bench run with out insulation so I could see what was going on so I repositioned the temp prob further round to the left side around eight oclockish
I set everything up as you see on my garden workmate and gave it a run
Started ok I let the turbine get going and she settled down into a steady idle left it for 30 sec then took it up to 60000 rpm for 15 sec everything seems good no vibrations or strange noises so everything looks good I'll give it a few more test runs on the bench to make sure all is good before I put it back into the heli

The turbine and second stage have now had 5 bench runs time to refit back into the predator think I have it sorted just need to get some insulation for the second stage
I notice that the trex 700 with the mw44 the second stage has not got the insulation I am presuming its because its a little more ventilated than where it is located on the predator any one confirm this

The predator is flying again thought I would never get there the only snag I have is i'm losing oil from the gearbox I think its going through to the second stage and being burnt off

Probably need to oil feed the gearbox what the best way if any of doing this I was thinking of taking a feed from the tunnel feed to the gearbox
if the gearbox oil is leaking into the tunnel then it should be ok to do this ??
will this work ??
just sort of thinking out loud any ideas
