buster1 did you design and build everything from scratch/custom?
Crazy talent.
Yes everything is designed from scratch except for the gears. The gears I source from KHK USA, I pick the gears I want and they have downloadable 3D model files so you can just insert the gears into your design, simple. I use Solidworks for part design and assemblies, Fusion 360 for CAM programing.

Here is what the tool paths look like in Fusion 360 CAM. The Sherline mill is a light weight so I can only go with a 1mm depth of cut and 0.001" per tooth chip load.

Thanks for providing the link Mark.

When you look on the web site don't pay attention to the out of stock on some items. Just call them and order what you want. They will tell you it will take a month to ship then the gears will show up at your door in a week.

I found this good video on how the Kmax control works. I found that the yaw control was performed by differential collective pitch with some mix of differential cyclic pitch. But I was wondering if this would induce a roll component, this video explains why that does not happen and answers my question.

In light of this new information, Joel, my friend, buddy old pal, is it possible to reprogram the mixer to add in the differential collective mix?

Hi, also a great project ! Hats off ! ..

Just a quick question - maybe i missed it in the tread before but are you going to create your own fuselage or purchase one (if so which one ?) ? And what would be your approach when building your own ?

Thanks Koen

If you find a KMAX fuselage for sale you will be lucky no one makes one that I know of. I plan on making a fuselage as soon as the mechanics are fully flight tested and I am happy with it. How long that will take???? In the past two years I have become a grand father twice, helped both of my kids buy houses and put an in-law apartment addition on my house with renovations to the master suite. Like they say happy wife happy life.

If you want to see how to scratch build your own fuselage go to Butch Wellmakers posts. https://rc.runryder.com/t797362p1/

Hi, thanks, good tip ! Pretty labour intensive process though. I was thinking on creating a plug from foam, laminating it with expoxy / glassfibre and removing foam using a solvent as it is just a one off for me.. hope this will not get to messy .. and plastering the outside to make that smooth.. anyways good luck ! reg koen

Happy Holidays everyone.
I have been looking into making 3D printed molds for the Kmax fuselage. I found a guy in Germany RAMY RC Youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCa...p8iuUfda5398igA
He has made some very nice planes using 3D printed molds, I love the Gulfstream G650.

I like his mold making methods and will try it for this project. I took the Horizontal stab and created a separate part, start with the small part first.

In the part file I created separate solid bodies top and bottom, this will make the top and bottom mold halves. Using the "indent feature" in Solidworks the horizontal stab was cut out from the top and bottom mold halves.

From here I saved out the top and bottom mold halves as separate parts to be 3D printed. After the parts are done the mold finishing process is the same as any other method, filler primer and wet sanding to a very smooth finish in preparation for fiberglass part making.

If you are wondering what the black section of the mold parts is, I ran out of the silver PLA and had to switch over to black near the end of the print.
