My First RC Helicopter
Mine was a GMP Cricket with fixed pitch back in 1980

I loved that little helicopter and rapidly moved up to larger heli's with collective pitch. I still occasionally fly the Cricket to this day, 35 years later just for fun.

American R/C Revolution I (.40 size, fixed pitch) back in 1976.

This was a very battered, used machine when I got it (I battered the poor thing a lot more).

It flew well, and gave me very good service for several years.

My first Heli was a Blade CX2. Then a bought a crap 450 Trex clone on eBay. I was fighting the Heli more than learning to fly. Then got a Blade 400 and truely started to learn. Also got a Raptor 30 at the same time. That was so "huge" and it scared the heck out of me so it sat for years till I got over the size and "scary" factor. I started around 2008.

GMP Cricket here too, 1983 and I still have it! Fixed pitch, wood blades, piano wire drive for rear rotor, fly bar, and no tail gyro. Those were the days, I spent a whole summer crashing and rebuilding until I could hover it.

Me too! The GMP Cricket 30 black/standard addition, with fixed pitch. I started back in 1984 with a girlfriends father.

I was self-taught, I crashed a lot, and I learned to make some of the parts needed... Teetering springs, improved tail drive wire, straightening the boom, main blades, etc. Used a standard 4 channel airplane radio and no gyro! Yea, I was nuts! But I didn't know at the time what a gyro was or how it worked!

I graduated to the Heliboy heli, my first collective heli with a mechanical tail compensation, the basics of a gyro.

I sold my Criket, but bought one to restore and fly some day!

X-Cell .60 1001 kit. About 1986. I still have it and still take it out from time to time. You know, the good old days weren't that good. This equipment was the best you could buy back then and it's nothing you'd want today. Keeping track of the tail with a wire drive, slow servo, and mechanical rate gyro is a full time job. "Flying" roughly translates to "keeping track of the tail".

"Well, Nothing bad can happen now."
