Hi,

I have a baferling issue with my mini in that it loses all power about 4 min into a flight. I do not do hard 3D just fast sports flying. I have flown this heli for about a year now in its factory fitted ACR RC equipment on GENS ACR and Xpower 45c batteries. It has the ACE RC GT5.1 FBL Controller fitter and I have now fitted SAVOX servos. The ESC is the ACE RC 45a unit that came with the heli. I have not changed any settings on it except the throttle points on the first day and never touched it again.
How do I test for the issue? I have checked the obvious loos connections and damaged wires.

You mean it looses power to the motor or the whole heli?

The heli looses all power and the FBL Controller begins the boot up sequence. This occurred in flight twice now resulting in damage. I can say that I notices a reduction on RPM and motor surging but it fades to quickly for me to land safely.

Could it be your batteries have had it?

Both my GENS ACE and Xpower batteries are brand new with less than 8 cycles each.

If the motor is surging that's a sign of low voltage. I have my timer set for 4 min on my mini titan. At 4 min your battery is starting to loose it's voltage. So probably your battery is just give in out or you have something in the drive train causing some extra friction and pulling the battery voltage down.

In the start post you said you changed to SAVOX servos. If possible, check your current from moving the servos.
Higher draw servos can affect overall flight time - especially when going to HV servos.

ALSO - double check the voltage cutoff setting on the ESC- if it has one.

Id check for bad solder joint. If your fbl unit is reseting your loosing power somewhere And then its coming back. If at 4 min you lose power and youve checked your batts and they are good id suspect bad esc or bad solder joint possibly. id start there.
pull the mains and tail blades and try to duplicate it in the bench

I used to fly this model on a 2500 3s pack that had a dozen cycles on it, charged perfectly but just wouldn't put out under load.

What happens when you restart it with the same battery? Will it run for any length of time?

It runs for a bit but usually I'm reluctant to get any flying in after this. Might be a plan to try this again with training gear. Could it be that my head speed is to high?

OK how about your charger...is it up to the task of charging your battery all the way and are you checking that you have a full charge on the bat before the flight starts?

Maybe it's time to check the battery and charger? Run the battery in a different heli or try a different battery in your mini titan?

@PilotPin I have my timer set to 4.30 min. Will drop it to 3.45min. I'm used to 8 min on my old eSky Belt CP. (Don't laugh, that heli was awesome. Very fast but handled like a wheelbarrow!) I have not tried to restart on same battery. Will try that with training hear in low hover so I don't run the risk of trashing the heli.

@Dee Files 3D will check your advice regarding the ACE RC BLC-40. There are a load of settings but as far as I can tell the default factory settings are still in place bearing in mind that this was a ARF heli. That said I have been flying it for over a year now but when I took delivery the FBL Controller had NOT been set up by the factory so yes anything is possible with the ESC.
How do I test current draw?

@johnbs8 I am planning a full strip down as the mini has almost 200 flights so time for a big maintenance inspection. I am putting back abou 1600 on average.

@TNoore I have some 2200 3S 45C Gens Ace I use on my Invertix 400 I could try but will my ACE RC BLC-40 be OK?

@rpat I am using a Turnigy ACCUCEL-6. I always check that I have 4.20 v on each cell and charge at 1500 mAh.

I will also lable my bateries so I can see if this is one with an issue.

Sludge - a multi-meter can work if you have one. Similar to an in-line device that is plugged in between the battery & ECS to monitor how many AMPS / VOLTS the motor draws, you monitor between the ESC & the receiver OR FBless controller. With the radio powered up,(unplug the heli's motor) move the radio sticks rapidly so as many servos move together as possible. This should show how many AMPS / VOLTS the servos are using. You can also hold a blade from moving & try to move the servos & see how much power is drawing as if in a 'LOADED' condition.

Some radio's support a data logger that captures this info while you fly, so afterwards you can evaluate how much power is being used thru the whole flight.

Some feedback:

I have swapped out the ESC and programmed in the recommended settings for the mini and still same issue. On shutdown after landing as I pull back the throttle to spool down the FBL Controller reboots. Will go through wiring and test each battery.

The TT 40 amp ESC built in regulator (BEC) is good for only 2 amps of current. Way too marginal these days for a FBL heli with upgraded servos. I suspect your problems began after you installed new servos.

Being unable to supply adequate current, you end up with a BEC output voltage drop, the controller resetting, and an apparent loss of power due to your electronics being reset.

What kind of new ESC did you install?
