I doubt that was it. The Talon 90 has a history of bad soldering on the ESC side. This *just* happened to a friend of mine. He posted a thread of HF and everyone came out of the wood works about it.

The problem is not your soldering (assuming you've checked everything over). With my friend's problem the middle connector on the ESC was just held there by the case. He was able to just pull it out. His symptoms were just like yours. Heli would spin up and all of a sudden shut down after a short run.

Remember, the Talon 90 does not have motor connectors on the end of wires like most ESC. The connector is soldered directly on the board. I helped him soldered it back on and it's working like the champ. You do need some heavy duty soldering iron. If you don't have the facilities, just send it back to Castle.

For those voting for static electricity discharge as being the culprit here, the belt-driven tail rotor design of this Raptor 550e is not much different than the belt-driven tail rotor design of ALL Raptors ever manufactured.

The Raptor series has not been known to be one of those designs where static buildup/discharge is prevalent.

Those red pulleys have been around for YEARS on the Raptor design.

I was just throwing the static discharge idea out there. It's merely a matter of corelation mostly. The raptor is the only bird I've owned where the belt touched more than the two gears, and its the only bird I had drop out of the sky for no apparent reason.Goblin! where have you been all my life?

Ah, if he did then disregard the mis-soldered ESC connection on the ESC. I must have missed that.

BTW, your wife must know my wife! LOL!!!!!

Maybe the moral of the story is to start at the bottom and work up.Setup is everything, All my heli's can fly far better than I can pilot them

I would still recommend following kingmeows advice and at least pull test the connectors on the ESC. A stalled tail servo would have to pull a lot of current to shut down the RX. Running without blades is a very low current draw event.Part 107.
The only ZERO flight hour certificate in the world.
It's like getting a driver's license without the driver's test.

I'd also recommend double checking the motor/power connections on the ESC. At the very least you could always send it to Castle to have it checked out.

On Raptors and static; take an e620 with metal lower frames, put an x50 metal boom/tail on it (belted), then mount your electronics on the metal frames.

See how many flights you can get on it in cold dry air before it lawndarts.
E820, Raptor G4N, X50F/E, E620, Forza 450, and some planks.

TRAVESTY
flew the helicopters today. The Raptor has flown great 10 flights.
Today I was 3 minutes into the flight sport flying it was going awesome. Then about 100 yards away the stupid thing shut down and lost all control. This problem killed me. The whole bird is messed up Airframe full of damage all scrapped. Blades bad..Tail boom actually made it Receiver and beast x look good just afraid to use any of it in a new airframe. I thought about sending beast x and receiver to get checked but might just chuck it all and cut my loss. Its been a long time since I crashed and it sucks when it is an equipment failure. engine looks good to and belt just don't trust anything anymore on this bird.

The 500 x and 5003d blades flew awesome.

What would you guys do?

Sorry to hear that . Intermittent problems are the worst ! And if your like me , I need confidence I'm my equipment . And that crashed stuff will give you doubts . Sending in the equipment to be checked can't be that costly .
Any of the newer radios like JR ,DMSS and Futaba, FHSS are very good .
Good luck
