contest flying question (nats specifically)
I emailed the AMA today to get some info about the nats. I wanna see if I can get in competition shape by ircha time and go a little early to compete in the sportsman class at nats.
Couple questions about setup and rules.

As I read the rules from the AMA competition book. Section 4.4 states only a rate gyro can be used. I was under the impression that FBL systems where now allowed. Am I looking at the wrong set of rules for nats. here is a link to the rules I was looking at.

http://www.modelaircraft.org/events/compreg.aspx
https://www.modelaircraft.org/files...CHelicopter.pdf

2nd question is what kind of a setup and a good blade choice for this style of flying. I would assume I would want more docile maybe tone the head-speed down on my 700 to like 1600-1800 Hs. With a f3c style blade choice. And tone down cyclic response rates. Or would a more aggressive head speed like 1900-2000 with mild sport style cyclic rates be a better choice.

Thanks for any help you can provide
Also the Heli will Be a KDS Agile 7.2 That Im gonna setup specifically for the more technical side of flying.

I competed last year in sportsman at NATS with an FBL model.
FBL is allowed the posted rules haven't been updated.

For the hovering maneuvers you'll want a lower headspeed and very docile cyclic and collective.
For the aerobatic maneuvers raise the headspeed.

Blade choice is up to you. Try out some blades and practice!
Keep in mind Sportsman have eight minutes to complete their maneuvers and headspeed plays a great part in this.

I am considering the same. I am curious if electric helicopter contestants are stopping and putting a newly charged battery halfway through?

My understanding from reading the rules it is allowed.

Any feedback would be helpful for this newbee

Also can anyone point me to any F3C flying videos? I would like to understand what a good sportsman flight looks like.

I hope both of you can make it to this year's NATS. Now is the perfect time to start planning and practicing. There will also be a few contests before the NATS so perhaps one of them will be an option for you as well depending on your location.

I'm wondering if an older version of the rules document was posted by accident. I though I saw a reference in there to a 42V (10s) limit as well which was changed several years ago to allow 12s packs.

I don't recall seeing anyone swap packs during a flight at the NATS I've attended.

There are some NATS videos from previous years in the TV-Photo section here:

https://rc.runryder.com/rrTV-Photo/

There are also lots of pictures here:

If you're planning on staying at a hotel make a reservation early as they can get booked up with IRCHA later in the week. On-site camping is also available at the AMA site.

Also, you need to register for the NATS by a certain date to avoid the late fee. Sorry, I don't recall the date off the top of my head.

Thanks for the replys and clarifacation that may be older rules not shure but its what is listed on the ama site. So wanted to double check. Also I'm one of the lucky I only live an hour from muncie no hotel needed. But do wanna reniforce previous statement if your comming from out of town plan way in advance. Hotels fill fast as does golf cart rental if you need one. And onsite power can be an issue a couple places have power but main flight line for ircha does not.

I wrote the "emergency" rules change verbiage for AMA Class helicopter for 12S right after it was passed for F3C years back. It easily passed. 10-12S models comfortably get through a round on one set of packs.

I am in.

Been practicing.......and practicing.........I still suck but I tell myself it will be good experience.

After practicing the whole pattern multiple times I can get it in and still have margin on the battery packs.

Now if I could just do a decent inverted triangle!

See you there

There wasn't any specific details last year about a daily schedule.
From my memory it went something like this:
Sunday Day - Practice
Sunday Evening - Pilot's meeting
Monday - Start of contest - two or three rounds
Tuesday - Continued competition - two or three rounds
Wednesday - Finish competition - Fly remaining rounds to complete a total of 7 rounds - present standings

With less than 30 days to go, I'd highly recommend anyone who hasn't registered for the Heli NATS to do so as they gauge interest based on entries.

"Stall turn and roll.......easy"

Wait til you do it in competition and get a grand score of...

"7"

That's 2 pt (out of 10) from judge 1,
2 pt from judge 2,
and 3 from judge 3, who is so happy to see anything (we call him Santa)

You read the criteria. there is enough to be critiqued and subtract points you may have a negative score before you get to the stall.

LOL

I am NOT Joking! I have been there.

Enjoy.

And you can find folks to call for you when you get there, that's is the norm and how you make close friends

Don't worry I have low expectations of my performance. Just going to experience.

Plenty of pilots around to find a caller.

Santiago we aren't supposed to scare them with scoring till they are there. ;-)

No worries, it's all about learning, having fun, and becoming a better pilot. My goal is to finish with my heli in one piece.

Munger I will be there Sat afternoon practicing and on sun to. If you want I will pm you my number and we can call for each other.

And santiago, Points is points lol as long as I don't see a negative in front of the final score all is good. I agree with Munger as a first year and first competition ever. I think the experience and instruction I will get by watching others will be worth the price of admittance. I'm just hoping the nervous fingers don't cause me to wreck before ircha lol.
