Decent article in the WSJ today about the technical hurdles, including battery life, weather, "large birds," ...

Probably paywalled... http://www.wsj.com/articles/technic...IDDLE_Video_Top

oops, bounced it!

well according to "history" we were sopposed to have flying cars for everybody by now and have manned missions to the moons of Jupiter...

I dont see this happening for at least 15 years... if the human race makes it that far.

so yeah I agree 100%...

just too many hurdles to over come at the moment. collision avoidance, weather, animal avoidance, red neck/gangsta projectile avoidance, power source durabiltiy/endurance, package insurance, payload capacity vs cost vs profit gained.... on and on. not to mention the airwaves are bursting at the seams bandwidth wise already (you gotta have two way comms ontop of GPS and for each one).

smells to me like reality is, to get rich, you use other peoples money, and this smells like just that, a gimmick to attract dumb rich investors.

my money is on unmanned ground vechiles for commercial use before this BS ever takes off.

yeah nice try ( I saw that one last year) but... the article reads:
"The prototype is a work in progress," he said in an email. But he said to expect the price to be several hundreds of thousands of euros
so its no where ready for primetime, and at that price only the mega rich can even consider... its nothing more than a smallish plane that has drive wheels that happens to also be longer than an econoline van.

besides people cant even manage a ground based vehicle... imajine what the sky would look like with the dumba$$ drivers we have now.

...come to think of it just look at what the general populace has done with drones...

You think they would be as reckless with their lives at stake?

I literally never use the word literally right.

ever drive thru any congested interstate highway and watch people F with thier phones while doing 80+ mph? its gotten so bad here that the city of Austin Tx has now passed an ordinance that will fine and issue a citation for messing with your phone while driving. the traffic jams during rush hour are so bad that half of the accidents are more than likely caused by distracted drivers with thier phones likely the root cause.

but back on subject.

FAA "airworthiness" certificate... a worthless piece of paper that really means nothing IMO.

Well at least somebody at amazon gets to play with thier multis and get paid to do it for a year...

Heck, not too long ago there...at night, somebody just stopped in the middle of I-35...to get out for a "selfie"....blam...multicar pileup with fatalities.

Don't think Amazon has considered that thugs will not only steal the packages....but the drone itself.

Why not, she sounds like she's really good at multitasking! Must be like, one of the best drivers on the road!

Heheh. Sorry just using text-while-driving (TWD) folks' rationales for what they do.

Back on subject,

Yeah I think others have supported my sense that this is a PR campaign. Once the realities of the costs/viability hit, the investors will drop like flies.

EE, are you suggesting that Amazon hasn't thought of drone theft, or cautioning against anyone making such a (foolish) assumption?

oops, bounced it!

Soon. I hope. Honestly I dont even care if drones become mainstream, I just want them to normalize in the media and in culture so we can continue our hobby. It's all speculation, ignorance, and varied interest-groups right now.

I think that the FAA would beg to differ with you on that. Just get caught flying an aircraft without a valid Cert and you will be faced with criminal fines and jail.

The sooner the RC community starts to act in line with existing FAA rules, the better off we all will be. This comment demonstrates why licensed airmen are so worried about this community. If you want to fly, learn the rules and regulations.

RC community
But how do you define this? Is the guy who Amazons a quad and flies down his street in the RC community?

See that's the issue. We have no control over the idiots out there. Expecting "the community" to fix these issues is impossible. Hence, policing.

Yes you do have control over the idiots... you report them to police. That and when they cause damage or injury to someone make sure it is reported. That is the way GA works.
