Don,

The deck is just the header page.. The rest of your documentation will include pics of the real heli and you are more than welcome to show your build too (just don’t shoot yourself in the foot and show something you did not do).

Sometimes it’s best to let the judges miss those items. Make sure however if you did add a detail that you want them to see you point that out.

I have a buddy that’s a top gun competitor.. he will go so far as to not detail a side of the plane that is not photographed. Seem like he is cheating himself from the build but becoming Mr Top gun takes work and detail that cannot be proven is wasted time to him.

From the contest side of things...

Think about it.. he is right..

Ok, I think I have a good grasp of the document maze. In your Declaration, regardless of what class you are entered in, you should list the components of your build that you did not do, ie: a store purchase scale accessory, store bought mechanics, head, etc., but more importantly the items that you did build. In this document, you are allowed to show pictures of your model in the stages of construction and can highlight items in the build you made from scratch.

In the Scale Docs (518) you are allowed to give a brief rundown of the subject helicopter and then you should list the pictures that follow the basic trail, fuselage, cockpit, landing gear, and rotor systems. Under no circumstances are you allowed to have any pictures of your model in this document, period.

In the event I have the first part of my reply wrong, I do have a backup set that has no pictures aside from one of the model helicopter at the very beginning of the Declaration. I hope this is correct, lol.

Ok guys, I think I have them all finished for now. I know that as I get better pictures for the CH-139, the main Scale Documentation book will be updated. So this is what I have for the Nationals. I have one book that is nothing but the pictures of the original subject helicopter with a short history of it. The first half is the history plus full 8.5x11" pictures and the second half is sections of the pictures that I have zoomed in on for the details.

The second book has the Declaration, a couple of pictures of the helicopter as it is ready, and pictures of the various items listed in the section of the items I made. The third is the Declaration with a couple of pictures of the helicopter ready but no pictures accompanying the list of things I did on the model. I built the chassis from a kit and the same went for the body so I didn't include it in the things I did, even though I did the entire job. If I have that wrong, it takes only a single page reprinted with the correction.

If I should list the chassis in each helicopter as things I have built, then would someone let me know so I can switch where it appears on the list. Thanks.

The second set of books is for my 500MD TD, and since it is only for Sport Scale, it consists of the Declaration and list of things I did to the model. The second book is the same plus pictures of all the work I did to the model. There is a similar list to the Declaration of the CH-139 of things I didn't manufacture myself. Have I finally figured out the scale docs thing? If not, I have still lots of time to fix and get them ready for the Nats/IRCHA. Thanks a bunch.

Don it is not rule but standard practice is to have 3 dock books one for each judge. The book should have 1-Declaration Page 2- 3 View drawing
3-Pictures of the full size heli and only of that heli.

Thanks Darrell. What I have right now is the 3-view and pictures of the actual helicopter in one book and the signed Declaration page with the list of what I did and didn't build in the second. Another version of the book with the Declaration has pictures of the build in addition. Both of those books have a current picture of the model helicopter in it but no pictures of the real helicopter. I can switch things around if needed. Take care.

I think this might be getting over complicated... lol Proly my fault.

Sport Scale.. this is what I fly

This class requires just a Declaration page and 3 view. (one peice of paper) I dressed mine up with a pic of the heli I happen to model (you do not NEED to model after any real heli).

You will have 5 min or so to tell the judges what you did to the machine.

Also...I listed important "kiss the judges" facts like my heli was a kit, I put it together, I painted it and I used X radio and what not.

Past that point you are good to go.. Also.. I asked a few years ago and any apparatus’s like "ground support" scale (bamby buckets) for instance are not legal in scale heli contests.

Decide your going
Practice
Make a Declaration page
Practice
Drive to event
Practice
Chat with judges
Fly contest
Giggle like a 13 year old school cus you had so much fun!

its just that simple...

Hi Mike:

I am pretty sure have got the requirements down for my Sport Scale entry as it is pretty basic. It's the 518 Scale that I wanted to get right as it where I will spend most of my efforts now, and in the future. It is getting to look more and more like it is time to rethink the TOW Defender V2.0 as there is no way to get enough pictures of the helicopter during operations in Israel. I might need to look at another version unless I can put enough pictures of one single unit that can match what I have for the CH-139. At least, I can get up to date pictures of the interior once I get to Manitoba and that is what I really need now. The outside was easy as there were enough high res pictures to make it possible. You didn't mention if your 500 is back up in the air and ready for the Nationals? See you soon.

Great post Don. your right.

If you are going to fly 518 you have to have good docs.. if you have something.. anything.. on the model that you can not prove you might be downgraded.

Or.. show somthing in a pic that you did not do.. bang.. down grade..

Your dead right.. you have to match the pics with the build.. Inside and out..

Document
Document
and lastly.
Document some more

My 412 will be my 518 machine BUT.. if I can not find good pics.. (I have ZERO access to a 412).. it too might become a sport scale heli.

My Winco macine is on hold.. I have to get home first (my little red head and I are moving back to Wisconsin) and I will not have a shop for some time.. this year "might" be a building wash for me. Thanks for asking dude.. I still will try to make the nats and IRCHA even if I have to fly last years stuff.. I want to hang with my buds!

518 Documentation Books
Hello Don, and Michael,
You guys are just having too much fun with this post..
I know Michael has the sport scale info, since he has been there, and Don your OK there too I think!!
Don, in 518, as Darrell noted, 3 notebooks are a great help to the judges...this way, each judge has his own copy to look at, instead of passing them around..
Each book has:
Declaration page
3 view
Pictures of a walk around (best) of the full size heli you used as the subject for your scale build..

Thats it...

Not quite as complicated as it seems to be in your prior posts

Good Luck, and looking forward to seeing everyone there!!!

OK just got home from the Dentist Had to leave early from B'ham with a tooth pain went to the Dentist and he did 2 root cannels New Dentist he did less pain than I have had with a small filling. Must be some good stuff
LOL so if some thing comes out sidways you guys maybe will understand

Back to post There are a couple of thoughts on my side When we have more people it would so long to do the static.

Let me plant a seed, Judges looking at one book Judge 1 finds a problem and he is looking it in the book and judge 3 picks up on what he is looking at
and you got busted. Then Judge 2 goes what going on over there and guess what happens next.

But this is some good stuff

Hey, I have never heard of a root canal having less pain than a regular filling so I want some of what he is giving out, lol. Glad he got it fixed quickly. I guess you were in the chair when I called but I gave Stan a call in your place. Thanks Stan. I told him what I had for the Scale Docs and that was good but I didn't have the Declaration in that book. It was in another with pictures of the build but nothing of the original. Now, I have the Declaration, a brief history of the helicopter, the 3-View drawing, and then large pictures of the helicopter plus zoomed in views of the items I built and/or detailed to match the pictures. No "Photoshop fixing" was done so the colours, brightness, and contrast are exactly as they are in the original .JPG images. It's a shame when one of the best resolution pictures has nothing more to offer than the ones I used to do the build, sigh.

Everyone has been very helpful and this is something that I can use here once enough of a spark has been generated for a scale competition up here. They haven't had one in years and talking to one of the early helicopter aficionados that has participated in one of those, there was no differentiating fixed and rotary wing. They all competed together and it could have been as much as 15 years since the last official Scale competition in Canada. Most everything is now Fun Fly's. See y'all soon.

3 sets of Doc's
....not to mention, but judges are lazy....lol

But seriously, it does make it so much easier having 3 sets of doc's and does make things move faster...along with the fact that Darrell stated about one judge finding something wrong and then passing that along to the other ones.
