OK guys, I have a Gartt 450L which is a copy of the Trex Dominator 450L. The reason Im posting here is because I am running a Trex 430X 4050kv motor. I am running 3s. I love the heli but I have a problem. The ESC is a Hobbywing Platnum 50A, after a 3 minute hover, the battery is at 54 degrees, the ESC at 87 degrees and the motor at a wopping 180 degrees. What is going on. I have it hovering at 55-60% throttle.

The motor was on the heli when I got it. Do you all know of a better 3s motor that's not expensive?

Thanks for all the help.
Jamie

Is there backlash between the main gear and pinion?

Does the drive train turn freely?

May want to lower the motor timing in the ESC if possible.

My bet would be some sort of binding in the power system OR the motor has a shorted winding. I run into this quite often with slot car motors. You get them hot once and the enamel insulation on the windings breaks down. The motor gets hotter and hotter with every use cycle until if finally fails. As we say, they don't run so well after you let out the "magic smoke"!

The Align 450m or 450mx 3400kv work great and run cooler.

But back your 430x, what gearing are you using? Can you go down a tooth or two in the pinion?

If you are running 350mm blades that would probably cause that small inruuner to heat up. I'd assume the 450L is heavier than the old 450s that would have run that motor?

I missed the part about it being in a Dominator clone. 4050kv is too high. 11t is probably the smallest pinion you can use because of the shaft size iirc.

4050 x 11.1v = 44955

150 main / 11t pinion = 13.64 to 1 ratio

44955 / 13.64 = 3296 head speed (roughly)

Maybe the op can tell us what pinion is on there? If there is no binding anywhere, Id guess the pinion is too big.

IMO, there was a big leap when Align changed from the outrunner in a can 420-430 series to the 450m or 450mx. Personally, I'd get the 3s version of the 450mx or 460mx and call it a day

Thanks guys. I think it has the 12t pinion and 121 main gear. I will find out for sure this afternoon. I have brought the timing down to 0% and there is no change. You can't touch the motor.

I was think maybe a 3600kv motor

I have a stretched 450 DFC with 350 blades that does really well at 3300 Governed HS, Its only 3s so I cant push too hard. But 3500 that I have tried is a lot better and more snappy. For the 450l If its heavier then you will need the HS.

Also if you want to run 3s your options for motors will be limited. I would get the align motor for now and run the best HS with a 12 tooth that you can.

You could get a more favorable ratio by going back to the 150t straight gear.

It would help to get your throttle up around 85%.

I looked up the Gartt kit - says it comes with a 12 tooth pinion.

The 430x motor came in a 3550 and 4050 kv version. There probably is a sticker on the bottom of the can telling you what you have.

With a 12t pinion and 3s battery, the 4050 motor should turn the head at around 4000 rpm. The 3550, about 3500 rpm.

The 430x was not a terribly efficient motor and ran hot.
