Using Attn:RR requires a bit of work by the user. I want everyone to participate improving RR's signal to noise ratio. So a quick click to rate a post is the next logical step. For sure the negative feedback will be queued for moderation before any public dissemination. And probably only your Like clicks will show up in your profile for others to see.

Please comment and provide feedback via Post Reply.

Mark,

It seems that an immediate results of these new implementations is that it has forced some to more carefully consider what and how (often) they post. Whether or not all of what you've most recently put into place is valuable remains to be seen. But, the immediate results is that some may be forced to think before they write.

While I'm comfortable enough with who I am to spend little time obsessing over other people's opinion of me, I would be hurt if I acquired 75 "ignores". As the saying goes "There's your sign". On the other end of the scale I would consider the time I spend posting well spent if I immediately acquired 200 "buddies".

Time may suggest that some of these features are not having exactly the expected results but there seems to be only positives at the moment. Further, there is nothing to say that these features can't be modified or removed if things don't go as planned. I really like that you have at least tried something.

I have noticed that most things thrive, at least for a period of time, under a "benevolent dictatorship".

Should this system apply to the off-topics sections (esp. News & Politics)?

Things tend to run a little hot in there.

I appreciate the feedback. The big picture is in play here, and I am only privy to it. I think so far so good on the upgrades. I don't see how the new buddy and ignore stats will impact RR RC Heli discussions and new post creation.

Only the RR moderator will take action on the analytics. For the RR member, the analytics can help overcome the weaknesses of the current member rating system which is only based on post count.

I think the Like and Attn RR would accomplish what you are after but have no issue with the four categories since you will be the only one to see the three and could provide some clarity. Or it could muddy the waters since some are more sensitive than others.

I've read most of the conversations concerning this topic over the last week or so without giving much input. Here goes. It seems like Mark is trying to make this place better for the users and I applaud that. If it translates into a forum more likely to attract sponsorship that is a benefit to the owners as well. These two interests will always have somewhat conflicting motivations and finding a balance is really the challenge IMO. I believe at this moment in time RR to be a far more friendly place for hobbyists than another prominent forum. An 800 pound gorilla that has made it clear to anyone paying attention that sponsor dollars will ALWAYS take precedence over individual users trying to help others or gather information that does not come directly from central marketing.

No offense, but I don't see how making buddy data public contributes to the problem statement: "The problem is convincing the troll that he is in fact a troll."

A number of users have voiced concerns about this turning into a popularity contest and buddy statistics seem to support that claim.

Trolls only become trolls by way of the posts they make, not the number of buddies they make or keep. Perhaps the individual post rating system alone could be used to satisfy the problem statement.

Just my $0.02.

Where is the popularity contest issue being hashed out? The repeated complaint is that a high post count member is not necessarily bringing anything more to the table. Seeing how many people follow that high post count person (buddied or ignored) provides more credibility.

pretty much, WJ.

Mark: its easy to hit the tiny close-set social metrics buttons without even trying. Maybe some kind "Are you sure?" prompt after clicking on buddy/ignore or any of the statuses would help.

I accidentally sent a guy an ignore using an ipad to look at RR fullview. My fault my hands, but point is that I think a two-step process could help.

It will be moderated and based on a consensus of who's voting. If one votes wrong too many times then ones voting will be ignored. "Incorrect" will be the least used and mostly reserved for back end consumption.

Who is voting will be kept private.

A post will only have one vote (of six choices) by a member. How the voting is disseminated remains to be seen.

You know something that would be cool?
If the ignore button not only made it so I don't see their posts, but they can't see mine

The only fool proof way to do that is to make it so you have to be logged in to visit the site and I know that won't work.

Would still be cool if there was a button to completely block a person out.

I literally never use the word literally right.
