Nope, it's not....
In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Clair Cameron Patterson accidentally discovered the pollution caused by TEL in the environment while determining the age of the earth. As he attempted to measure lead content of very old rocks, and the time it took uranium to decay into lead, the readings were made inaccurate by lead in the environment that contaminated his samples. He was then forced to work in a clean room to keep his samples uncontaminated by environmental pollution of lead. After coming up with a fairly accurate estimate of the age of the earth, he turned to investigating the lead contamination problem by examining ice cores from countries such as Greenland. He realized that the lead contamination in the environment dated from about the time that TEL became widely used as a fuel additive in gasoline. Being aware of the health dangers posed by lead and suspicious of the pollution caused by TEL, he became one of the earliest and most effective opponents of its use.
This is true.

Just so you know, there was a good piece on this on the new Cosmos series. ep 7 I believe.

But it changes nothing in the way that we today date the rock formations. That is a fact.

And I owe you an apology, as I misunderstood your original post

NP...done that before myself....

Yes, the Cosmos series...was just on here.

Was disappointed in their cartoon type presentation....and they did a rather poor job in explaning how Patterson dated the age of the earth, as that was what I was more interested in.

He had to get a meteorite that had zircon in it...as zircon rejects absorbing lead from outside sources....and such meteorite was created at the same time as the earth....and could not have been contaminated by the external presence of lead during the meteorite's creation.

A specific uranium isotope exists naturally throughout our universe....and eventually decays into lead after a known period of time.

So any lead present in the meteorite's ziron is from the decay of that uranium isotope present within the zircon.

The lead in the environment from TEL use in gasoline contaminated his experiments...and he invented a "clean room".

And then the data made sense...and he found the earth was ~4.5 billion years old....by the ratio of uranium to lead content...using a mass spectrometer.

But, that the lead contamination issue that plagued him, caused him to investigate and to prove that TEL was causing problems.

Very interesting...
