I've been meaning to ask the dumb question for awhile... Using my PowerLab 6, can I charge batteries with different Mah at the same time, example - Turnigy 4000's, and Turnigy 5000's?

I have never even tried this, but am curious if this is possible or dangerous.

Thanks.

Have you ever seen champaign glasses stacked up to make a pyramid at a wedding reception where they pour the drink into the top glass? When the first glass is full it will overflow down to the glasses on the next level below. This continues until all the glasses are full.

Notice the top glass can never hold more champaign than the capacity of its shape allows? When it is full it is full. The excess is passed on to the next vessel.

Same with battery packs. IF they carry the same cell count, they can be charged in parallel and the electronics will flow to the battery with the greatest unused capacity. The cells and packs with closest to fully charged will finish first and pass the excess along to the other cells and packs.

There may be a difference of opinion on how fast you can charge packs in parallel.

Some believe that you should charge no faster than the charge rate of the smallest pack.

Others subscribe to charging at the combined total of the final pack size to determine the charge rate.

The 4000 batteries I have are max charge 2C, so I stay under that when charging more than 1 batt. I set to 14A for 2 batts, where 16A would be the max.

So, if I mix some 4000 and 5000 batts:

3 4000's - less than 24 total for sure, around 20A
2 5000's - 12A

So, I will charge at 20+12 = 32A max total with the 5 batts connected.
