Please let me knos what is your favorite long term gyro tape.
The only one I have used is the stock Futaba gyro tape. But I know it can have serious long term reliability issues specially on glow helis.
I know 3M 4011 grey/red is a good one and since it is easy to find I will give it a try soon.
But I would like to know about the gel tapes from Mikado, Align, Linx and others??

Tried most of them including Zeal which was once the greatest thing out there.
But yeah....3M 4011 is the best so far.

I literally never use the word literally right.

I gotta admit to using Futaba's own.

Sure is expensive, but it's up to snuf. I put it on, it stays on for a year. After that, I replace it. I wouldn't trust ANY contact glue to hold on longer than that. So I'm not sure why the concern over long term reliability.

That said, I've used 3M in a pinch and it seems to be OK. Just a little large for the 701 and thicker, which is probably unnecessary.

The general rule with 3m 411 tape is two layers with nitro helis and only a single layer with electric.

tape
I've used the zeal tape for yrs.once crashed my Hirobo Shuttle on pavement from 200 feet..the motor broke in half but the gyro was still attatched! It seems to work better on nitros..The v-bar on my 550e didn't like it though.

That's because it's too squishy and the gyro can move. Tried Zeal. Did not like.

I've had the futaba on for several years and they are nitros. I often wanted something that is more available. May need to try the 3m 411 tape. Please post results

You should use a strap across the unit to slightly compress the Zeal layer.

Except the futaba tape is fine no strap.

And Zeal is fine with a strap, who cares?

There are those that say strapped Zeal is superior to anything else. I don't know enough about it to say that, but whatever you use, use it correctly.

Heh. Just saying I can stick it and forget it with the Futaba tape. I've made the little "gyro seatbelts" in the past. No thanks. Of course everyone is free to use what they use. I'm just saying why I ditched zeal.

What's the controversy of gyro tape?

Never understood, as these tapes are made by other manufacturers for completely different purposes.

There is no "Futaba", "JR", "VBar" tapes.....just what seems to work...

With the freq. pass-bands of the FBL's MEMS gyros, vibes are a 2nd to 3rd harmonic of the heli vibes...~20 - 30 KHz.

Is there any data from a brave soul....that uses a VBar that has R/T inflight vibe telemetry....to obtain data on the wide variety of commercial tape available?

Perhaps that would give better insight....

no universal tape
there's no need for a controversy over the OP's question--he wants some opinions for a long term holding solution; I've found Zeal to be very reliable on nitro's which seem to have more vibes than electrics; I use it on my 660n & 700n without a hold down strap; I have an old 601 on the 600 and a gy520 on the 700--haven't changed the tape on either of these in over a year; I tried using it on my Logo 550 with the mini-vbar but it was not rigid enough; the Mikado tape worked much better for that gyro; the Mikado tape really holds well too and has been on that model for a year.

Yes....let's take some data as best we can....with instrumentation instead of speculation....and determine what's the issue..

This has the potential to be come very confusing because there is both a 3M 4011 and 411 tape. My guess is that both will work well for mounting gyros.

As an aside, I don't know how I hobbied before 3M 4010 tape.

good times
Here's a little graphic evidence of Zeal holding power; this bird went in on pavement from high up! you can see my CSM360 still attached to the aluminum "L" bracket on the left with the green rubber band around it--check out the broken OS32 motor case;that was a depressing crash!

I always use Futaba gyros ( my choice) so I use their replacement gyro pads, they work well.

On my Nitros I did cable tie them and on my turbine I used a loose elastic band, yes the pads are expensive at 4$ for a pack of three ( that brings back memories LOL)

but when it is a vital part on a 2-4K machine grumbling about spending $4 seems a little pointless to me..

Never really had a preference. I usually use what's supplied with the equipment I bought.

Can't say I've ever had an issue with any tape, but I always make sure to check bond at least once before every flying session. If it seems "iffy" I just change it.

I've also been known to dab a dot of thin CA on my pads before placing them. Never on the equipment side though....that side just gets a good alcohol scrub before application or I do a soft velcro strap around the unit when it does not affect equipment function.

As long as you check your pads regularly, pretty much any tape sticks the same as another.

I use zeal gel with I think comes with 3m vxb tape on both sides of the gel. It works great on nitro n gassers. El it's kinda over kill but have plenty of it so they get it too

As far as superior hold the vxb tape is the best, it sticks to every thing as said earlier use a alcohol pad clean both surfaces 1 layer of tape on Heli then 1 layer of vxb on the gyro the stick them togather on electric heli's

I did some testing of various tape stack ups a couple of years back using the Vbar's vibration monitor on the bench while holding a vibro- etching scribe on the airframe to simulate vibes.

I found that the old method of one layer of Futaba tape on the bottom with a metal plate followed by a single layer of 3M tape to hold the sensor seemed to offer the best vibration attenuation. Much better than the Zeal which was also tried.

The metal plate may not be necessary with the newer sensors but it still works for me. YRMV
