Who is smarter now?
He may be smarter than all of us combined. Likely that there are no rules in place to charge him for doing this in his country. So he will get a slap on the hand and told not to do it again.

In the mean time, his business gets round the world name exposure and he makes millions doing videos.

That just seems to be the way things work out.

When I was having lessons my CAA map around London Gatwick and London City is 1500 - 2500 feet in controlled airspace max Altitude.

The go around procedure for Heathrow was at one time and this going back a few yrs..

If active runway is 27L @ Heathrow procedure was to climb and Left turn over the runway on to track 150 degrees, climb to altitude 2000 feet. If conflicting traffic is just airborne from 27R then the departures tower controller would turn that out the way.

I agree the guy is a moron.. he would have only been 500/1000ft, as has been said I am sure as we all return or arrive at our holiday airports the last thing we want is our aircraft to suddenly do a dive or climb and leave our stomachs on the ceiling..

I agree and it is said, any publicity is good publicity no matter how bad it is.

I don't know what the air order laws are in Turkey. I would hope one of them is not to endanger the lives of travellers in, out and through that country.

As Aaron29 says many of us will be air passengers somewhere and would hope our journey would be as safe as technology would allow. We can only pray that on top of all the terrorism prevailing, any journey we make wouldn't be cut short by some moron having 'fun' with his toy.

If it takes legislation with harsh penalties for wilful endangerment of life and property then so be it, but I think legislation won't stop with just Quads; it will impact the whole RC hobby.

Lets check out the 'Predictions for 2015' thread and see what the clairvoyants are offering..

just out of interest..

was there any evidence to show he had ATC authority ?

I am surprised how long he flew and was not intercepted by Airport police.

When I was first learning to fly model helicopters on my Raptor 30V1, I flew at Flyin Fish which over looked RAF Northolt London UK, Northolt is one busy airfield, with passenger and dignitaries flying in all the time along with private jets.

The instructor every morning had to phone the tower to say the school was about to start flying for the day, and same procedure at the end of the day to confirm shut down for the day.

I could guarantee at least once or twice in a day the Military police would come over to check or we would be buzzed by the police helicopter as we showed up on their radar.

I am amazed how long this guy flew for and NO ONE came to check, if you were to try that near the city or Heathrow or Gatwick, you would have police swarm on you in minutes.

Needle in the Aiport Haystack.
First the Phantom (obviously a Phantom) would have to be detected in the airspace.

Just imagine checking every vehicle, roof top and window within 2 miles of the airport within the 20min flight time of the Phantom. The police would have to get very lucky, track the radio control emissions, watch the video transmission, or have an observant knowledgeable citizen report the location to find the RC pilot quickly.

Just saying that it is not an easy task to apprehend this jerk. Much easier to track him down with his web footprints. This pilot obviously needs to buy a clue!

I certainly do not approve of any such flight operations. It is very risky and the consequences quite deadly. We all need to be aware and report anything like this to law enforcement. You need to become familiar with the equipment and antennas so that you can report it.

You make a very good point i know the airports are massive in the states.. over here though Most towers have binoculars.they would see an intermittent blip on radar. Call airport police/security.. There would be flashing blues and twos and be there in minuets.
Reason I mention this I showed this video to a friend of mine who works for London ATC at One of the London airports he said they have had incursions in past.. balloons Chinese lanterns and hand gliders and even an airship. who cannot read their maps properly..
They make a call to police heli and within mins they are there circling the airport. With the hand glider and even an airship they were directed to a nearby airfield in this case Biggin Hill and we're dealt with..
It was Co incidence my friend who is a training captain for fly Be was at the CAA house doing paperwork after heart surgery a few days later, he said you could hear the pilot being shouted at 4 rooms away... He was fined and severely reprimanded..

In fact amongst private pilots here in uk the CAA is campaign Against Aviation they are so strict..

He said at the moment there isn't a record of a model incursion..

Edit
Have to say I have found this thread very interesting.. It's nice to see all flyers come together and be unanimous in condemning this fool..

Sorry to add something else
At the New Year celebrations in London embankment there was someone flying one the big Oct copters filming the fireworks..
I wonder if that was a hobbyist.. as it is central London that is controlled airspace and the approach into Heathrow..

Fireworks in London NYE

Watch at YouTube

The Copters flightpath appears to be confined to over the river most of the time... It shows a couple of times in this clip.

Check about 4.35min.

There seems to be a bit of real stupidity which starts at about 8.35min in the frame bottom R/H corner where it crossed the North Embankment and continues over the crowd. I wonder what the logic or authorisation was to perform that stunt. It goes against all we are discussing on this thread.

Time to mail the BBC I think!! If I get a response I'll post it here.
