Flintlocks right?
Yes don s. That's another derivation of the term. I believe it refers to when the primer powder in the pan ignites but not the propellant powder. Thus, a dud that makes a bright flash and a lot of smoke, but nothing more.

I think we're mixing idioms.

"Flash in the pan"...

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dict...0in%20the%20pan

"Didn't pan out"...

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/pan%20out

The flintlocks answer is the real answer, not the derivative. Not only does it predate but it also explains the idiom more clearly.

Either way. If you have a flash in the pants you are going to need at least a dermatologist, fast.

Aaron29, follow this link.
http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/...in-the-pan.html

A derivation means developing or obtaining of something from a source or origin. It does not necessarily mean the original source. Hence the use of "source or origin" instead of "original source" in the Oxford dictionary.

No mixing of idioms here. "Flash in the pan" was used for both flintlock guns and gold mining. It is still a very common term used in gold mining. So is "hit pay dirt," which is the term used when the layer of gold bearing ore beneath the overburden layer of soil is reached.

A derivative is a math term used in calculus for the rate of change of one thing with respect to another. For instance, velocity is the rate of change in position of something with respect to time. So velocity is the derivative of position, acceleration is the derivative of velocity, both with respect to time.
