Converting Vario Electric Mechanics to Clutch
The clutch conversion of my vario electric mechs is complete. Vario does not offer a clutched version of their electric mechs, so I made my own. I used the vario motor mount that's called out for these mechs, scavenged the 22 tooth clutch, 40 tooth gear and spacer bushing from a stock Benzin and used a 146XL belt. The belt fit perfectly and I used the mount in the standard slots, this left a ton of room for belt adjustment. I machined the clutch adapter, but Joe at East Coast Scale has these in stock, they're for the benzin electric clutch conversion. With this set up I retained the stock benzin gear ratio and used a Xera 300kv motor. My motor had a 25x25mm hole pattern, so I added this pattern to the stock motor mount. I also machined spacers for my motor to keep the clutch inline with the driven gear(I didn't want to shorten the motor shaft). Some motors may or may not require spacers. Here are a few pics.

Hi Barry,

Nice work.

I was wondering, I have seen a lot of talk about adding clutches to Electric motors..

Are the motor output shaft bearings up to the job ? as you are adding a side load to the shaft now and from what I have seen I bet most clutches are not balanced and have run out on them causing vibes? I wonder if anyone has put serious hours to make a reply, reason for asking is I have a scorpion motor and one of the only negative things I have read is the output shaft bearings need regular checking and lubricating. So before I think about adding a clutch to mine I wanted to raise my query.

Matt: Good question. I have run this basic electric clutch set up on a few benzin based machines with zero issues to date. With scorpion motors, I just upgrade to high quality Boca bearings, Xera motors already come with quality bearings. I may have to shorten the motor shaft, as it has a rather long moment(leverage) with the spacers installed under the can. We'll see, I have to run it first. I'm just trying to avoid shortening a $40 shaft

I also have several hours over 3 seasons running 800 size and up without any problems...
I have never had any balance issues either...

I have about 14 or so
scale machine flying and those that were once nitro are now converted to electric. all the newer builds all use mechs that were originally designed as a nitro bird but converted to electric during the build. all of them are utilizing the clutch as originally supplied with the kit. for an electric scale machine, the clutch is the only way to go. Performance is basically the same but there is added realism of a spoolup when used with the soft start feature of the esc. this earns them the name "poor man's turbine"
the clutch also helps to act as a safety feature in the event you bump a throttle stick or switch to full while you are still in reach of rotors or any other moving parts. also, the clutch also gives the possibility to "slip" in the event of a crash that causes a sudden stop of the drive train therefore a chance of saving parts.
I like the idea of using a set of nitro mechs to convert to electric because the mods are simpler and usually limited to just a motor mount instead of a mmotor mount and clutch mod.
to date, I have had no issues with a clutch or the motor driving it.

clever as always Barry, I have given much thought to having clutches on my vario electric conversions but elected not to bother as the kontronik jives have a good slow start feature.

Is your reason Barry purely for scale start up?

I can also attest to the longevity of the electric/Clutch set-up. i flew my Vario Huey (Benzine mechs and Actro 395kv motor) for 6 years and never had to touch anything in the drive train. If anything it got better when the clutch "wore in" a bit. Put the same exact set-up (except opted for a 495kv and larger driven pulley)in my new Cobra and flies flawlessly...

Glad you guys like it

Gary, I like the clutch mod for a couple of reasons. One as you mentioned is the nice scale spool up. Jim can attest to that first hand, he's seen 2 of my clutch converted scalers fly. The second reason is that the drivetrain takes less of a beating overall. I agree with Emile, in the event of a mishap, the clutch does take some of the abuse out of the airframe and gears.

I agree, with not only the spool up, but the machine itself also becomes so much smoother, and powerful...totally different machines on electric..

Hi Barry, I realize this is an old thread, but I am in the process of converting my petrol Benzin to electric. I would love to keep the clutch, its for a scale Bell 430.

Since I have the original clutch parts and the adapter, I'm thinking it's just a question of drilling (with threads) the holes in the clutch adapter for the set screw(s) that hold on to the motor shaft and maybe get some sort of collet (with the holes for the set screws) so that the motor shaft will fit snugly in the adapter? The rest should all be the same I guess.

I wish it was that easy... The Benzin clutch adapter has a tapered inner bore that seats on the tapered crankshaft snout of the engine. I machined my own custom adapters for the straight electric motor shafts and made my own motor mount. Joe Howard at east coast scale helis sells the clutch adapters and motor mount for the benzin.All helis and planes have an expiration date stamped on them...you only find it after you crash!!

Thanks for the reply Barry. I realized this when I went into the details. I reached out to Joe and he no longer has these in stock, so I sent the plans to the machining shop and am making the mount and the adapter. I hope to have them next week. Will update. I really want to keep the cutch!
