Hi all,

Have a friend looking to get into our hobby. He wants a nitro. We both understand the benefits and detractions of both nitro and electric. I own both. I see the merits in the turn around time with a nitro vs. charging or having a few backup batteries (all charged) and I agree with him. Nitro will get him more stick time with less hassle. (He wants to mess with an engine as well)

All that said the real question here is what's the deal with Trex600 N being discontinued? I love my nitro, as well as my electric, but discontinued? Do you think this is the manufacturers steering us away from Nitro? Why the drop in Nitro sales? No one wants to deal with the Nitro any longer?

So if my buddy decides he wants Nitro, what are his options? what will the parts supply be 5 years from now? I know the elect and nitro parts on the Trex , a lot are interchangeable (not all)

Gaui? Synergy? Trex, Raptor?

Which or what other Nitro models would be a good choice?

Do we need to convince my buddy Nitro are simply no longer the way to go?

Simple fact is the Nitro side of this hobby has dropped and is only a small percentage of the total hobby. It's also dropping on the plank side as well.

If it was me, and I wanted a NEW nitro helicopter I would go with the Synergy. The other options for a New in production nito kit is TSA (both 50 and 90 kits) or the Gaui NX4 or NX7

You also have the used market. Lots of stuff out then for sale if you're in to that sort of thing. I'm not.

Sinergy is great, can't go wrong with it.

Where did you get the information that the T-Rex 600N is discontinued?

I was very sad when Miniature Aircraft closed doors. I was in the order process from my Wren 44 heli to use a Whiplash as plataform.

Sad day that nitro is being taken away from us by those who easily have the means to keep them at least available if you want one. Also, I just forget about the classifieds, everyone is overpricing their stuff lately and/or are selling junk for too much. Love the guys selling out of manufacture helis and even thinking its worth half retail of when it was being made and you could get parts, lol.

Calil, if you check Heli direct they indicate discontinued. Same with AMAIN hobbies. Wow hobbies still sells them, but they ship right from Align USA.

Tower did that all season last year. Discontinued by a hobby shop doesn't mean discontinued by the maker. Too bad the distributors are willingly leading people to the wrong conclusions. Perhaps a lame effort to get our dollars for something they would rather sell us.

I tend to agree with you, but there has to be some reason. it may be as simple as there is no demand by comparison to elec so they cant afford to carry both??

There are good finds in the classifieds from time to time, but I'll admit the door is open for both pleasant surprises and disappointment.

JR still has the Nex 50 out there also.

E820, Raptor G4N, X50F/E, E620, Forza 450, and some planks.

It's primarily one thing. Price. Fuel is insane expensive. Until that is fixed, the decline will continue.

I've basically bought my last nitro model until something changes. And I was an adamant nitro guy.

I thought 33-36 a gallon was too expensive, but I would pay it for the fun I get out of it. Club fuel buys last time I purchased was about 104 to 115 a case (4 gallons) much more reasonable. Its been two or three years since I got in on a fuel buy. Maybe its increased around here, don't know.

Not even at that price. I once considered myself a nitro diehard. I've given up. I've concluded that going out of my way driving or buying at bulk just to try to get fuel at a good rate just isn't worth it. Truth is, it's still expensive even at $22.

A fast charger charges faster than most can keep up with. It's all about the flying for me and I get enough. My record is 15 five minute flights in a session, and I wasn't keeping up with the charger. Both E and N can be flown more than I can handle in a day, so this point is moot.

I don't care about the tinkering anymore. I've stripped down my share of engines and what was once fun is just work, now.

So it comes down to smoke and sound. But, this is also moot. I have serious fun with either N or E once it's airborne. And the heli, and the maneuver I'm flying, not the noise/smoke, has most of my attention, anyway. The smoke and sound are cool, but not worth the premium IMO.

Apologies for the unsolicited push to electric. I'm just telling my story, since people are confused as to why nitro is declining.

I loved N while I loved it. I'm not ready to get rid of the ones I have. But neither am I intending to replace them when they are wore out.

So basically, to tie this in with the OP, I cannot in good conscience recommend it anymore and that's what I'd tell my friend. Let's not fool ourselves. The manufacturers do NO steering. They are out to make a buck and will sell whatever people will buy. Fact is, people aren't buying nitro. Why? Electrics are a more viable option now, and nitro is expensive.

Price of nitro fuel isn't a factor for me, but it could be if I weren't located where I could get it. I understand completely how it's a barrier for some. But it's not the only barrier. Micro quads and electric helis are the bigger sales. I think that is why Horizon stopped distributing Align. Now there is too much diversity within the market for a LHS to carry parts for anything. Used to be that a shop could simply carry Thunder Tiger parts for Raptor 50's and cover their area. When Align came along, they so quickly proliferated their lineup with models of every possible size and various versions of each that the shop owner could no longer keep up. In the mean time, came along Blade helis, and the evolution of quads with cameras. Now, our parts hungry machines with which LHS owners had no experience could not compete for shelf space. At least, that is what I gathering from it.

To the original question, though...the 600N isn't dead...

Thanks Aaron for your perspective. Much appreciated. I may end up trying to convince my buddy to go electric, it will be a hard sell.
