Scammed- I Feel Like Such an Idiot
I like to to trust people. I was scammed unfortunately, and on Christmas. It's totally my fault for trusting the guy I guess. A few weeks ago I bought a diamond engagement ring private sale, cash in person, face to face, no receipt, from a guy off Craigslist. It wasn't super expensive but it was a lot to me and all I could afford. I don't know anything about jewelry as I've never purchased any before. I emailed quite a bit and asked many questions before we met. I was confident it was legit. When I saw it, I thought it was beautiful and felt great about it. He was also a very honest guy I thought. When I gave it to her on Christmas morning she was very appreciative but let me know she really didn't think it was real for various small reasons. Well we took it to a local jeweler last night and it is not, short story long. I feel the worst about having given her a fake ring, not myself buying one. I waited a long time to do this and now feel like a total tool.

IT'S NOT THE VALUE OF THE RING BUT THE MEANING AND BOND OF UNITED BEHIND IT.

Some day hang a Ice Cube on her finger and then she will really complain her gloves don't fit or she is getting carpel tunnel or has a one trick finger.

25 years from now it will still be a topic of great fun and eye rolling at the Holiday Table's as the grandchildren are slinging mash potatoes all over grandma's kitchen !

It's not the value but the memories

Sorry to hear that

I agree, get the authorities involved, if only for the record of it.

I am assuming you tried to get a hold of him and have gotten no response?

I know hindsight is 20/20 but what I would have done is asked him to meet at a Jewelry store of my choice and have them check it out, more than likely he wouldve flaked far before actually meetng. Really sucks to hear that people out there are willing to screw people over without bating an eye like that, especially f-ing someones holiday for a quick buck. freakin a-holes. Sorry for the loss man..Still buyin' and flyin' then crashing and cryin'

Just a question :

Why would a Reputable Jeweler ? In Marketing Gem stone's Sale's give
a free appraisal between two OTHER parties.

It's why licensed Jewelers Charge $$$ for Licensed appraisal's for Insurance purposes unless you have been doing business with them for a long time - THEY KNOW their own product.

Clarity Quality and Cut Grade Ect. They also put their stamp inside the band's.

Lot of Commercial Monkey Business - It's a Piece of Carbon why they are Forever

Thanks guys. Honestly I am just going to let it go. I have no receipt and yes, he will not respond to an email now. My mistake, I can accept that, it won't happen again. It was alot of money to me but probably not to most. Grey Eagle, you're right about the meaning. It bugs the crap outa me but she will not stop wearing the damn fake ring I gave her. She says she loves it and intends to continue wearing it until we can get another one. (From a reputable jewelry store lol)

He didn't say anything about getting an appraisal. He said "check it out". And buy telling the seller, "Let's meet at such and such jewelry store" would do a couple things. He'd either flake out because he knows it's fake or show up and find out it's fake. Either way it protects yourself as a buyer. It takes 10 seconds for them to put their diamond tester on it.

On an side note, I have no idea why I am responding to anything Grey Eagle has posted. They way his posts read there's no way he could comprehend a thought out sentence.

Did you specifically ask if it was real and he specifically said it was?

Just curious, what little clues did your wife see as not real?

Yes I asked many, many times specifically if it was real and what he paid for it originally and where. No paperwork to substantiate what he said- only his word and the story of how the woman he bought it for broke his heart. (I know- you can laugh at me now) Her first clue was that there was no marking inside the band of the gold weight/type. I did not know to look for such a simple thing. Also, she has real rings passed down from family and the weight difference was obvious in your hand.

I would email him again n try to get more from him since she love the ring and once face to face lead the cops to the meeting or have a body guard n take every thing he got then kick him a couple times to teach him a lesson. Sorry your day got turned upside down. If n when ur ready to purchase either go to Kay Zales or a pawn shop for a deal, but first n fore most find out what makes a diamond a diamond all will have a carbon spot in the very center n will scratch glass. As far as cost diamond vary under a carot will have very little value n the band n setting are what will make up the value of the ring now over a carot will have some more value. My first engagement failed n I wound up with the ring n found out the hard way a 500 3/8 carot on white band princess cut was only worth the gold it was set on so needless to say I kept it n my 2nd go around I got a heart shape 3/4 carrot from Kay n were now married so needless to say but size shape n real fake to meaning was all she needed so save up n down the line replace it with what you n her pick out togather

Oh n congrats on the engagement

Inclusion's or carbon in it - is a Sign to run like forest gump.

You 1st start by inquiring about the Stones on hand : If they have VSI's or what range quality they keep or can bring in on consignment it's a common daily thing. What range are you looking for ------

You can easily purchase a Small stone of a Higher grade and quality which is worth actually MORE than a larger carrot weight stone.

Be very care full about purchasing production mount's -

They got to do some thing with em. Why their are Mall Shop's -

Most quality jeweler's would never open a Mall Shop or hang a shingle.
You go to THEIR place of business. Their is never a press to purchase - just courteous.

Wait till you see a whole tray knocked over ! It's a Hoot - !!!

Don't ever put em a Utra sonic cleaner either - Unless YOU own the Ulta Sonic OH MY !!

Just make it simple swing by your Local : pick up a Rating and qualification brochure usually given to the public.

The Industry Protects Itself with Education of the Buyer

Then start learning a bit about the cut's or facet's and why the rage on the NEW One's and what their hiding. Also know their are new modern synthetic's just absolutely full of fire at 1/3 to 1/2 the cost.

Same go's with GEM Stones which can be either dyed or tampered with and are typically SOFT or Fragile - Very -But VERY Pretty .

Don't put them in a Ultra Sonic EITHER !!
