Why are rockets not launched from the top of the world instead of near the equator ?

Hoping I can ask here as there are some pretty smart folks around

I don't claim to be smart but isn't distance to the outer atmosphere roughly the same from any where on earth? (Obviously a little less if launching from atop Everest or something. .)

Wikipedia...

Rockets can most easily reach satellite orbits if launched near the equator in an easterly direction, as this maximizes use of the Earth's rotational speed (465 m/s). Such launches also give a good orientation for arriving at a geostationary orbit. For polar orbits and Molniya orbits this does not apply.

Altitude of the launch site is not a driving factor because most of the delta-v for a satellite launch is spent on achieving the required horizontal orbital speed. The small gains from a few kilometers of extra altitude at the start does not usually off-set the ground transport problems in mountainous terrain. The advantages of high altitude include slightly less vertical distance, lower air resistance and lower air pressure (which generally improves thrust).

Kinda Neat :

Essentially it must reach a circumferential velocity around the perimeter of the Earth to escape the pull of gravity.

The further out the orbit " distance " - the faster you got to go - because the distance is greater from the pivot. Stinking fast !

Here's a interesting Nugget they forgot to teach our youth.

Which was the most absolute defying space achievement EVER performed by AMERICAN Astronaut's ?? Or by ANY ONE in the SPACE program ??

AMERICA

It was Not the Lunar landing : TWO LIVE AMERICAN SKIN"S ON BOARD : OUR"S They don't even know their names : They are CRAZY !!

The Biggest / Baddest / Most Explosives on Board / Had the Most Kinetic Energy Ever Built by Man / Most Tonnage ??

Ok Rosco we never flew this sucker---Never Tested it EITHER !!!
Man that's a Big SOB and it's growling at us !!!

But let's kick it right in the SLAT"S !!!! You Good ?

by launching near the equator towards the east, you are using the already available rotation of the earth (tangential speed) to aid in the rockets launch. basically you are using the swing of the earth to help throw the rocket out there. so you use less fuel.showing a preference will only get you into trouble, 90% of everything is crap...

thanks for the replies

Here I was wondering why, So it easier to launch near the equator VS northern or southern poles.

I was thinking it would be easier the other way around but I'm not a rocket scientist

So buba got the answer quick. Now the bonus round.

10 points if you can explain why we launch in Florida and land in California. The answer is related to the above and should be fairly obvious

Because if they miss the California landing, the earth's rotation will get them to the alternate emergency landing zone, Florida or Anderson, Guam.

Correct.
Since they are going east to take advantage of the earth spin, we launch on the east coast so if anything goes wrong the wreckage comes down in the Ocean. On landing they go for Cali, so again if something goes wrong the wreckage hits the ocean, or if they overshoot the alternate locations in Texas, Florida, etc are available.

Aside from the technical stuff related to launching, velocity, and such, the environment one finds at either Earth pole is not conducive to the logistics associated with building, assembling, erecting, maintaining, and launching large space-bound vehicles. Weather at the poles is not particularly human or man-made vehicle friendly.-----

I was wondering if there was any advantage to launch from the top of the earth aside from being a nasty place to live.

but isn't part of space exploration is adapting human habitation to the environment.

Unless NASA get cocky and tries to land in Florida.
Then, the wing breaks off and the crap lands in Texas & Louisiana.

Watch at YouTube

I'm pretty sure all this was worked out in the early 1900's.

It's all documented in the above video and I think this is the way we really launch rockets.
