Charging llipos and What charger to buy?
I have messed with a 450 size heli for a while, but wanted to upgrade to a mid size 550. I went with a 550, as it has just one battery and I wanted to keep it simple. Now I have moved to the FBL world, which is new to me and going to a 6s 5000ma lipo. My charger that I have now is a small 50 watt- 5 amp out put max- AC/DC charger. When I tried to charger a 6s 5000ma lipo, I got 2.2 amp. output. So I think I need a bigger charger. I'm just a sport flyer and not into competition of any kind. So with these bigger batteries what is a good mid priced AC/DC charger? I don't plan on field charging, just bring the 4 charged packs I have to the field. Since there are so many of you that have been in this a heck of a lot longer than me, that might be able to offer some suggestions on charging. Also what kind of flight time should I expect on my lipo, just sport flying, with no 3D. Is there a power devise that can replace the Lipo when you are setting up the heli and the FBL controller, or is there no problem in set up, as the motor is disconnected and the drain on the lipo is small with just moving servos for setup? Thanks for any advise you can give.

+1 on Buddy RC, they are among the better places to deal with...
Progressive RC is also a good place to research batteries and chargers.

Your 550 should get around 5-6 mins flights, or more, on a 5000 mah pack...depending greatly on you gearing, head speed, and flying style.

A little schooling to help with decisions
You may find it difficult to find a an AC/DC charger (built in one) to do what you want it to do and here is not only why but the tools to help you decided on what your charging needs are.

The short answer is it is all about Watts.

Watts = Volts * Amps

Lets look at your battery first.

A 6S 5000 battery means this; 6S equals 24 volts average.
5000 mAh equals 5 Amps, so the wattage of this battery is 120 watts.

Knowing this, for a 1C charge rate your charging system has to put out at least 120 watts. 1C means it will take you approximately 1 hour to charge your battery.

To charge your same battery in 30 minutes, that would mean you would need a 2C charge rate (240 watts). 20 minutes would require 3C charge rate (360 watts), and 15 minutes would require a 4C charge rate (480 watts).

So with this knowledge it helps you determine which is the best charger for your needs. Getting into the larger helis like you are, it might be best for the long run to look at a 500 watt charger. If you think there is a potential of getting into 700 class helis, you may even want to look at a 1000 watt charger (charge needs double going from 6S to 12S)

Just a bit of information to help you with your decision

Thanks for the info, being new to electrics. I flew glow and gas heli's years ago and didn't worry about watts, voltage and amps for powering. It is getting clearer now as to what I need to charge, so now I can make a good choose on a charger.
