Power Supply for Astro 109
Hey folks,

I'm just getting back into the RC Heli world after a 5-year hiatus, and it seems that I've forgotten nearly everything I once knew, which tbh wasn't that much to begin with. I need a power supply for my Astro Flight 109 battery charger, and I see Astro sells the MeanWell SP-150-13.5 for around $75. You can get them elsewhere for closer to $50, but is there any reason I couldn't use something more like this?

Or this?

I don't need more than 12V, I can only charge one battery at a time, so why should I get a power supply with watt/amperage ratings that go way over the requirements of the charger?

I don't really know what pack you are using at this point, but I think you will find that where you are at present might not be where you are in the not too distant future.

My recommendation would be the newer HP (I think) DSP 1200 server supply. There are some good threads about and instructions on setting one up.

I got two for right at $50.00, and I don't think they are only sold in pairs on Ebay. If you have any type of electrical ability, it is really easy to get it working. All you have to do is solder a resistor across two electrical lands. No opening it up is necessary.

The really nice thing about it is that it is expandable to 24, 36, 48 volts by adding units in series. This is all explained in the threads here on RR and on other forums, so it would lend itself to future setups if need be.

Hope this helps.

While you are getting a new PS get a new charger to go with it. The 109 is an ancient technology by current standards. For good safety when charging lipos, you need a charger with integrated balancer so the charger as well as you can monitor what each cell in the pack is doing during charge.

Great. I just picked up an HP DPS-1200FB on Ebay and will be following the instructions found here.

I'm sure this is a fairly well-documented process but I'll report back here when the process is complete. Ben, what charger would you recommend? I know RC flying isn't for poor people but I'm pretending I'm not one of them. Nevertheless, safety is valued and I'm willing to pick up a new charger if it's an imperative.
