go 56 heli engine conversion
So I ordered a Go 56 heli engine last night and was told that I should start a build thread on it so I figured I would open one and update once I actually have the motor. Right know anyone with any knowledge of this engine and good break in procedures please feel free to chime in all the info I can get will be much appreciated. This will be my first attempt with a gas engine of any kind on plane or heli. But I think it will be a good change I will always have one nitro heli and at least one electric. But gas has the potential to become my main heli. As it should meet my needs of long flights and less support equipment (ie chargers, gen, etc) and won't come at a cost of $25-30 a gallon. If it goes well the synergy will get the same thing. If it doesn't Maybe I can save someone a few buck by not having to try it. But either way I will give it my best attempt and honest opinion. But I really hope it turns out good.

Here is a run down of what I am planning to use as the heli was flown all last season on a hyper50. And while I'm no 3d pilot just sport flyer it should give me a good comparison to how the heli will handle with the little gas engine as compared to a nitro motor.

Trex 600n pro, will be using a ar7200-bx flybarless and Im also gonna try and use the spectrum back plate sensor with beastx gov. castle pro bec, 2cell lipo for electronics and ignition. The plan is to just make this a simple motor swap with out any other changes from the way I flew it as a nitro bird. I will update as I get the motor and time to break in but it is winter in Indiana so I have a coupe months before I can really put it in the air should give me ample time to break the motor in properly.

Ok so I have switched it up a little and decided to use my synergy N5 instead of the trex.

Upon mounting the motor I found I can use the trex fan But did require me to re-drill and tap mounting holes in the top of the fan to fit the synergy clutch on it. Other than that it was a straight bolt in fit.

But for those who have experience with this motor I have a question. On the hall sensor for the timing. How do you set it when you mount the sensor there is adjustable built into it. Do I mount the sensor in the center of it's travel, or slide it to left or right.

There is no description in the instructions on how or where to set the timing for this engine.

I'm hoping to have everything ready this weekend or next to start breaking the engine in.

yes close enough for run
""" Do I mount the sensor in the center of it's travel,"""

yes a pain....but it did work.......but the plug needs to fire 28 degree's before top dead center, hard to tell you with out the rcexl test kit

I have run mine right, left, and in the center. Didn't seem to make any difference. Start it in the center and see what it does. It is not hard to move one way or the other.Jimmy, If it looks like a heli I like it.

I went ahead and ordered the timing wheel and buzzer for the sensor just so I could set it and never mess with it again. Was only 15.00 and if it works I will use it again cause if the power is decent on this bird my other nitros will get the same thing. And if not shouldn't be hard to resale to the plank guys at the field lol.

On the clutch stack-up for this bird upon assembling with the Trex fan, I found the clutch was sitting about .1" to low so I made a washer today at work that will sit between the the timing ring and the fan should move the fan and clutch up to the right height to get everything in proper alignment. I will try and get some picks of the parts I had to mod and stack up assembled.

Should be ready to finish all wiring by this weekend and once the timing is set start the break in.

Subscribed and intently following this.

I've got an N5c that I've been considering for this as well. You've already addressed a couple of my questions in just a few posts. Would love to see some pics of the modified fan and the shim you made.

Thanks for taking the plunge, please keep us posted!

got a little done on it this weekend but still have more to do to get it fired up still need to mount the Fbl unit and set it up but here is a couple pics of engine/clutch stack. I don't have any pics of the fan shroud but it was straight forward sand the inside of the the lower half to open it up enough to fit around the fan.

Sorry to diappoint those following along at home. But I'm gonna have to abandon project. I have had a friends gasser at my apt for a couple days fix some things and the gas oder is causing issue with neighbors and my apt complex. And yes I know I can use camp fuel with less oder. But between it and oil for mixing it won't really same me any money on fuel so I have every thing needed to bolt motor to a synergy n5-c. Listed in the engines forsale section. At a hundred off what it cost me. If you would like to pick it up I'm gonna go back to a nitro motor.

Sure am sorry to here that. The gas can make a lot of fumes, and smell up everything. For some reason I don't have a problem with the smell. I don't bring the fuel in the house, and I empty the tanks before I bring the helis in the house. 4 of them are hanging in the living room and no one has ever said they stink.
Then again I'm not sure my wife can smell anything. Heck she still lives with me. That is a bad sign.

Yea it kinda of sucks cause engine is mouted and hooked up wires are all ran only thing left was change fuel lines, mount pipe, and set up fbl system. But my buddies even with no gas in tank was stinking things up And with no garage to keep it in kinda of screwed. But its ok only thing I will need to replace to go back to nitro is fan shroud no biggy already have spare motor and pipe.
