No offense to the mechanical engineers but drill a hole in a 2x4 thats bigger than the shaft.

Chuck the shaft up in a drill and put the shaft in the hole and spin it putting some gentle pressure on the side of the shaft moving it in and out of the hole.

Roll it on glass to check.

Please don't twist that post, i can see the connotations already!

Hey rev, you sure those bolts will fit the bearing ID's? You've tested them, right?Part 107.

Unless those bolts are precision ground to an exact OD, they'll be a sloppy mess on the bearing ID's.Being straight to within a few thou is another point that would be interesting to see on Vblocks with a dial indicator.

I am glad I am not the only one who knew about this technique. I have straightened a few spindles and main shafts this way also, just didn't want to suggest it at this point

I was taught this technique by long time heli pilot when I was in dire need to straighten one a few years ago. It worked (most of the time) if the shafts were not bent to bad.

You should lubricate the hole first before you put your shaft in it.
