I especially liked the way everybody dressed in their suits and ties in some of those scenes .....to go fly messy airplanes! That had certainly passed when I started flying planes in the late 50's. So many of those people look really young too. Very entertaining video!

Look at the crowds!! That is what strikes me, how popular it seemed then.
IMO, no way most events today would ever get that kind of participation.

Toooo many diversions now........CELL PHONES/ electronic devices/other??

Back in those days there does seem to be more fascination of flight and participation in the hobby.

(video count 1:18) Even the level of safety where the boy is on the car's running board while the car going about 20mph and jumps off at the end to retrieve the plane before the car even stops. (pretty cool)

Back then it didn't seem like a big deal, kinda like riding in the back of the pickup bed or tailgate, today they would probably shut the place down.

That's why running boards were put on cars.

Damn that ground is hard! When's the right time to get out of this money sucking hobby?

Close friend of mine whom actually is responsible for getting me on the path " Johnny " Now in his 80's. -Actually traveled the USA with HIS Father attending Many National and Regional contest's and they and the contest's them selves where actually commercially sponsored. Put's the date stamp around the late 40's and 50's.

One of the few thing's (of MANY) that absolutely slayed me was when I was allowed in Johnnies mother's basement of the original family home. Must of been prior to her death, and the home being sold off to collect a few thing's.

It was FULL of these Monster trophies : Almost in Piles stuck everywhere - least 3' tall, all sort's of Cup's and Plaques and Even these Large Silver Engraved serving plates.

I was so struck looking at pile's of junk I was speechless - He and his dad traveled in the car - that's what they did ! Nutt's !!!
Kinda like Holly wood with model airplanes.

Making own fuel, keeping record's and test, temp humidity / using sling hydrometers, hand filing port's in motor's ect.

Rubber band competition ect all of it .

He is a very quite individual and doesn't say much - our club is absolutely clueless - like a couple of others that passed on.

He got me started
