After replacing my tail boom and getting everything lined up according to the alignment flange in the tail boom clamp on the back of the side frames and the tail fin post and screw in place, you can see in this photo my tail is not square with the rest of the 180. There is no adjustment for this, it either lines up or it doesn't.

Does yours look like this? If a brand new one is square then I am thinking the replacement tail booms have the slot misplaced for alignment. If a new one is not square then that would certainly hurt pirouettes because of the asymmetric torque on the yaw axis.

Correcting this would require filing the slot in the tail boom end to allow it to rotate slightly (about 3 degrees) to port.

You can't see it in the picture but the shaft is also down on the right hand side to match the tail rotor. So the shaft and the trail rotor hub are at 90 degrees, it's just the whole tail case is off by about three degrees.

Is yours like mine?

I have filed off a little material inside the tail boom slot and this permits about 5 degrees of movement so the alignment is perfect now. The tail boom bracket holds the tube securely enough to prevent further movement.

So it appears they have a "parts quality" issue with the tail booms. My feeling is a crooked tail is bound to effect the way the thing piro's. Mine wanted to dive down and away in a hover pirouette which is why I crashed the first time.

On mine, I noticed the tail out of square as well. I havent messed with it since the factory build, but I can grab it and move it so it is square. The next time I fly it though, it moves back out of square from the torque. I didnt figure it caused an issue, and didnt think it would tighten, so I just left it alone.

I am sure there must be a way to correct this easily. It sounds like a minor problem...to fix,,,at least to me. It is after all a first production run. After my first production run of the 130x I vowed never to do it again ,,not with cars or a Blade heli. The 180 overall though sounds much better than the 130x.
If I find any fault with it [after all parts are in] is the short flight time of 3 minutes?? Is that correct??

Setup is everything, All my heli's can fly far better than I can pilot them

Yep, thats all I'm getting, running at 75% or 100% and 3.8 or 3.7 Volts/cell after knocking it around pretty good.

Man, I love the thing. It really IS a fun little heli. NO major problems yet. My TP packs are running Very good. Its weird to be able to do tick tocs with such a tiny little heli. I'm getting a real good feeling that Blade hit the mark with this Model. It really is fantastic so far, and the layout/quality stands out above past Blade products, IMHO.

We were told today by the heli team at Horizon that the tail rotor shaft points down by design. I am just telling you what we were told. They took a brand new one out of the box and that's what they told us. My LHS called in on the dealer line. Could be, but I still am skeptical.

Just checked my Blade 450X, that is about a year and a half old, the tail shaft also has a slight tip downward when looking at it from the rear, this heli has always flown perfect out of the box...my new 180 cfx has exactly the same amount of tip to the tail shaft also,im not going to worry about it,just leave it alone and fly it!!...

Meowguy, did HH offer a reason why they designed the tail to point down slightly?

No they did not. I should have pressed them.

My 450 does not have any such malady.
