I have always preferred the 2 point tail mechanism that Hirobo and JR use on their tail controls to the single point "ball in cup" solution (ie: Mikado and Align ). When I saw an ad for the Mikado tail KDE upgrade, I thought I'd give it a try.

The KDE instructions call for the use of Align tail grips, but I went with QuickUK (trex600) grips instead. Aside from having to file down the travel stop on the support to allow full travel of the slider, it went together nicely.

There is definitely less slop in the tail linkage now yet it moves silky smooth. I was actually able to increase my tail gain 10 points with no bad effects. I'm running MKS X8 servos on the cyclic and tail. Between the servos having minimum play in their gear train, direct swash linkages, and now minimum slop in the tail system, I'm running both the swash and tail gains at 100. Even with the gain this high, because there is virtually no slop, there are no negative effects at high head speed or FFF. It's just super locked in all the time!

Really slick.

Will it fit a 700XX or 800XX?

I don't know EEngineer. KDE does have a 700xx and 800xx upgrade section and this upgrade is not in those sections. I think it's only for Logo 400/500/600 sx and se kits.

How much did you have to file off of the stop to get full travel of the slider ? Did you use a dremel of a hand file to do it ?

Thanks

I used a small hand file as I wanted to keep the stop surface square. I can't tell you how much I took off as I did it a little at a time and then mounted it again to see where I was at. The limiting factor is when the pitch fork will contact the linkage arm. You don't want that
I actually filed the "knuckle" of the pitch linkage a little just to give a little extra room for the fork to go by in case things flex in flight a little. By doing that, I was able to bring the pitch slider right up against the tail shaft support bearing to maximize pitch travel.

Thanks Kevin. I'd like to do the same mod on my tail as I have the same set up as you. Do you have any close up pictures of the area you filed out to help me ?
Thanks

You don't have to modify it. I prefer to go the extra mile to get as much performance as I can out of the part though. By filing the stop, I have reduced the safety margin of whether the pitch fork will strike the pitch linkage should the fork bend under stress. I choose to believe that if the fork ever bends enough to make contact with the linkage in my current configuration, I have much bigger issues happening.

I will take some closer pictures of the areas I reworked ... perhaps on the weekend.

It's a quality upgrade. KDE purposely leaves some filing to do in another spot as well so you can take off only enough material to get a slop free system with no binding.......cause you can't put material back on!

Because the KDE upgrade uses some Align parts ( which they can't control the tolerances on. I chose to use QuickUK on most of them ), they need to give a greater margin than if they were making the entire tail mechanism themselves.
