I have two helis ready for their maiden flight. The first is an Align 250 Pro DCF and the second is an Align 450 Sport. But with the rain and current wind gusts of up to 20 MPH, it looks like there will be no flying today.

I flew 11 1/2 LiPo packs on Monday and haven't had a second of stick time since. Oh, the 1/2 pack? A spectacular crash and rekit of my Align 450SA. I'm disappointed, as it only lasted ~1,600 flights.

I understand. Here in NE PA, we have had pretty much the same weather, and I have been doing some changes on my machines and can't get the test flights in. Either it is raining, very windy, or I have somewhere to be. It is supposed to dry out, but they are still calling for high winds.

Only 1600 flights? I'd say you got your $$'s worth and then some.

Well, the two helis finally saw their maiden flights this week.

The little T-Rex 250 DCF Pro initially had horrible wagging in all three axis. Blade tracking was spot on, so the issues had to boil down to radio/controller settings. Adjustments to gyro gain tamed the tail. Lowering both the aileron and elevator settings on the Align controller settled down the cyclic wag. This little heli now flies very well.

The T-Rex 450 Sport was a little more work. This heli is a bit of a "frankenheli", based on a first issue 450 Sport kit. An original 450 Sport FBL head takes the place of the kits FB head. A Spektrum AR7600BX with one Spektrum satellite is used for the radio link and FBL control. This is the 10th AR7600BX in my fleet and I've set up easily twice that number for other people.

The first lift off was interesting, to say the least. With extreme wagging on all three axis, I had all I could do to get it down in one piece. Taking the gyro gain down took care of the tail, but the cyclic was a hoot! I started with the three dials on the AR7600BX in the factory set 12 o'clock position. I had to back off dial 1 almost all the way to tame the cyclic. While this heli now flies very well, the setting for dial 1 is almost double the gain reduction that I've ever had to use.

Of course, the mechanical setup has been gone over with a fine toothed comb. Both the main shaft and spindle are new and straight. Blade tracking is spot on. Both the main and tail rotor blades have been checked for balance.

One interesting find is this heli's main rotor blade preference. I fly all of my 450 sized FBL helis on Edge 325 mm FBL blades. This heli actually seems to fly better using the kit supplied Align 325 mm CF blades.

Well, it's a beautiful day, temperature currently at 45 with winds 0, gusts 2. So I'm heading out to the backyard to fly.

Attack of the heli killer squirrel
Most interesting experience while flying this morning. I was hovering one of my T-Rex 250 helis about two feet off of the ground. All of a sudden, a squirrel dashed to about a foot in front of it and reared up on its hind legs like it was getting ready for a boxing match. I moved the heli back about three feet and before I could climb out, the dang squirrel attacked the heli. I pitched backwards so quickly that I stuck the tail of the heli in the grass. I hit throttle hold as the heli flipped over on its back. And then there is this insane squirrel jumping all over the heli, biting and scratching at it. While it attacked the heli for maybe 30 seconds or less, it seemed like forever. It finally just hopped away as if nothing had happened. The final score was no damage to the squirrel and broken tail blades on the T-Rex 250. I guess you could say the squirrel won!

Should have pitched it forward and given him a taste of the main blades.

Probably would have done more damage to a little 250 though.

because my backyard heli is mostly black and has a scale canopy Bell 222ish the squirel is mostly curious and sits on the fences for a moment to watch here and there, I flew a foot above it once unintentionally, it scurries away if I get too near to it now,

weather? it's raining out now so no airtime, backyard's getting smaller every day I fly there.
