Sweet video...thanks for sharing.

When I was a kid I had a 64 Renault, but I don't remember the engine sounding like that.

OK, color me dumb...what has happened to the sound?

They didn't go to V-6's or electrics did they? Oh the humanity of it all.

Yes, they did go to a Turbocharged V6 with electric assist, dynamic brake recharging, etc. They no longer call them engines, now they're power plants or something like that. Even the head of F1 says they sound like crap. Says spectators are not getting their money's worth when they go to a race as an important part of the race is the sound. The days of the high revving, screaming V8, V12, etc. seem to be gone forever.

Interestingly in the USA, they are talking a bit about improving the sound of Indy cars though even the V6 Indy cars sound better than the current crop of F1 cars.

They are called "Power Units".

Here is a great little artical on the PU:
http://www.formula1.com/inside_f1/r...gulations/8699/

I guess "The Head" of F1 is Bernie Ecclestone. He has gone on record saying he would like the engines louder and he thinks they are too expensive.

But, the F1 rules are made by FIA and FISA. They are the ones that set the rules and technical specifications year-to-year.

They sound like a turbocharged, high performance engine.
If you like that sound, they are heaven.
If you like the old V10 / V8 - they sound like hell.

Either way, it is what it is is.
Right now, Mercedes is the dominant PU. Almost all the teams using the Mercedes PU is doing well.
Red Bull uses the Renault PU. And they suck. Any team using the Renault PU is in trouble.

What makes 2014 interesting is watching Red Bull's Ricciardo and Vettel almost win despite a cr@ppy Renault PU. You know that the underlying chassis and drivers are better than anyone else on the track. If they could just keep the PU online.
