I have never seen mention of the chemical additive sleep state previously, alas it doesn't seem that long ago ballancing was thought to be a gimmick.
Jason46, the "sleep state" is a misconception taken from Lithium-ion packs used in the electronics and power tool industries. They use a circuit board that has logic for self discharge in order to prevent damage caused by being left fully charged for long periods of time. The self discharge is not activated until the fist charge by the user. This is known as the "sleep state". There is a risk to packs on store shelves that would be damaged from being over discharged if the self discharge mode was active - although most have a low voltage interrupt as well. Our LiPo packs didn't have this self discharge circuit until recently. Some manufacturers are adding them to increase safety during transportation. Mostly all newer BNF and RTF models include LiPo batteries that self discharge.
