Just saw on Tower's site that the last remaining old school Raptor, the Raptor 50 s RxR, has been discontinued What a great machine they were! I learned to fly on one.

I wonder how much of the issue of helicopters being discontinued is all due to Tower Hobbies (aka Great Planes). It seems like they get their hands on something, next thing you know that product is gone.

Just look at all the airplane kits that are no longer around when Tower bought all these kit mfg's.

I thought airplane kits died because nobody builds anymore.

E820, Raptor G4N, X50F/E, E620, Forza 450, and some planks.

I think kits died because the profit is in constantly having more people come into the hobby. People have grown accustom to instant gratification anymore and kits just make them loose interest and go elsewhere. I entered RC planes and helis with kits and I still think it's the best way to make a lasting foundation for a lifetime in this great hobby.

The Raptor had a great run and achieved great success. Arguably the most popular heli of all time. I remember seeing it at IRCHA in the late 90s before it hit the market. Back then it was available only as a 30. I eventually had two Raptor 30's. These became the v1 once the v2 was released. Time marches on and the playing field has changed considerably. Back then there were no FBL systems and no electric helicopters in that size. The R30 didn't even have driven tail and almost everyone was using woodies. Fast forward to today and it's easy to see why the Raptor has reached it's end of life.

Those are some cool memories AceDude. I only started flying helis a few years ago and my first was a Raptor50 because the 30 was already phased out. I still think about picking up a used one now and again, to complete my collection. The smallest heli I have flown is the Raptor 50.

Something else to keep in mind is the " new" E550 is the same basic bird updated. One would expect a good product to continue to develop and be updated. With current trends in mind I think this is spot on considering current market trends.

I do love my old birds as well and as having been a min air rep for over 25 years I feel you loss for the old but that is part of life. I think TT has done a great job so far and will continue to in the future but the market does dictate what they have to do to survive. They are here for the foreseeable future unlike so many other lines that have come and gone over the past 10 years or so.

You cannot legalize morality. It's internal not external. You either have it or you don't.

What about the rest of the world market. Is it just gone in the USA or is it also discontinued in Europe, Asia,..? Is it possible Great Planes decided to drop them but TT is still making it for the rest of the world?

Helicraft still has old Raptor parts. There websight has changed, and they are harder to find. (it says they are working on it)
http://heli-kraft.com/index.php?rou...ategory&path=96
But they have anything you need if you take the time to look, and a lot cheaper. But the stuff comes straight from Tiawan. I have ordered a lot of stuff from them, and they never screwed up my order.

I am from the camp that believes Tower hobbies is no good for the RC hobby. They assimilate smaller companies. Then drop them. Some will say they were going broke anyway. I say they make them offers they can't refuse. Then once they acquire said company, and they figure it doesn't stand up to their profit margin, they drop them. It's the big company Walmart syndrome. I also believe Walmart is no good, putting small companies out of business. It's the same principal.

Man was I late to the party. I love the Raptors. I stepped away just as I saw Tower taking over the product line which at the time I did not think was a good idea. Sure enough, I'm back and Tower has destroyed another product line. Anyone know when Tower became an employee owned company?

In 2005, Clint, Jeri and I sold Tower Hobbies to an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) but continued on in a leadership role. Now, the employees of Tower Hobbies own the company and have a real investment in 100% customer satisfaction.
