I was thinking of adding the Helibug Powerbug system to my converted Raptor90. I have the G240rc engine and currently run a 2100LiFe battery. Does anyone have any experience with this system? Also- I see a new 'More Powerful' Powerbug system is currently being developed. (To replace this one I assume) Should I wait for the upgraded one?

A 12min flight averages about 300mah so id say 5 flights safely.

I run a 3S 2200mah lipo on my gassers, I get an easy 4 flights(12-14 minute) on my FBL gasser and 5 flights on my flybarred gasser (16-18 minute flights).

I really never saw a good reason for a on board generator as I use my 3S lipos on other toys anyway...

Yea, I guess im interested in one not for extending my duration, but just for peace of mind. My current battery provides enough time to fly till im pretty much ready to call it a day.

You could install a Scorpion or Optipower battery backup system for added insurance in place of a generator.

The guys I have seen with these systems installed literally haven't charged their flight packs all season... They are charged every time they are flying and kept full just like our automobiles- I think that's pretty darn neat!

yes its neat but also consider that the more electronic gadgets it has hooked up, the more the chance for stuff to fail at the worst time possible.

for me, when it comes to gassers, the less stuff hooked up means less stuff for the vibs to mess with...not to mention overall weight (at least for me)

I'm still waiting for the day that Futaba comes up with a CGY750 with a built in RX...or servos that each have thier own individual RX built in to them with a channel setting...the less stuff to hook up the better...JMHO.

everything I have heard about the helibug generator has not been good. I have heard it will prolong you needing to charge your pack, but it will not keep up 100%.

this is what I have heard/read, I have not flown one. I sold the one that came on my whiplash before ever even using it after reading everyones opinions on it.

An alternator is a great gadget...inside a fuselage where changing Rx flight pack becomes a major pain. Otherwise its a nice piece of conversation...at your expense.

+1 RM3...the less, the better.

"You guys totally sank my battleship on this...."

Why! I had two of them on my gassers, and I would not go without it, I remember once I got to the flying field, turn on the heli and not a thing, batteries complete died! so I started the heli anyway,
I held the throttle servo by hand to a fast idle for a few minutes,
had enough power to go fly and when I came back and batteries where
fully change, so what not good abut that!

P.S. sorry for the spelling or the grammar I am dyslexic!

I dont know about the powerbug, but the Jewel saved my bacon when my expensive A123 LiFePo4 battery decided to croak in mid air.

Not to mention I could barely get 3 flights on that thing before the generator.

I'm one of those 'never charge' guys. Its nice. I never have to plan ahead... if I randomly have an hour to drive down to the field for a flight or two i just do it without thinking

--
BTW, if the powerbug doesn't keep the battery full, probably its regulator output is too low. It needs to be set at the "float" voltage of hte pack you are running. Thats 6.9v for a 2S life and I think? about 8v ? for a 2S LiPo. NiMH and NiCD packs dont have a specific flaot charge level as such since they dont use a CC/CV charging profile and may not work as well long term with a generator.

Mcfast, I've deployed life-rafts and the idea is still afloat I saw on their website that a new more powerful version is coming out- maybe this will take care of the not fully charging issue I've heard about?

By all means, get it if you want it. I saw one in the classifieds two days ago. As long as it gives you peace of mind, thats what really counts.

What you are looking for is a low KV motor in the 750 KVs range and
from 150 to 250 watts, that set-up works great ! or make your own!
