Hi all
I've been looking into the newest t-rex 550 pro dfc with the larger 730mx motor and such and have some questions in general. I have some 6s4000's that I use in a pattern ship that I thought would be a good match for for the 550 vs 600.

1st - So whats the deal with the t-rex 550? I don't seem to many of them for re-sale. Are they not selling or are they so good that they are not being resold? I don't seem to many of them at the fields so I have to wonder what you thought would be better, a 550 or 600?

2nd - The 550's seem like a smaller 600 with more power. Is there a real difference between thee 550 and the 600's?

3rd - Do the 550's auto half way decent? I realize they are no 700's but I do like my auto's.

4th - Any bad issues or negatives about the 550?

Thanks for any input

I love my 550, I have had it for about 4 years now and I like it so much I just built the new Dfc version with the 730 mx and will hopefully maiden it this weekend. It was a great build and a beautiful helicopter. I do like to run 550 blades over the stock 520 and it does auto well.

and the blonde said "RECTUM, Hell damn near killed em!!"

Please post something on how the new 550 works out for you and how it compares to your original 550.

What equipment /batteries are you running?

I have a 550 DFC pro and am enjoying it very much. I needed a 50 sized heli as I fly big gassers and a 450. I didnt want the hassle of 12 cell charging. as far as your Lipos go a 6 cell 4000 on the 550 will be abit light for proper CG. I use a Pulse 5500 mah 45C and a Glacier 5800 mah packs and the cg is perfect.
You may be able to run your two 4000 as a 12 cell on a 600 but they may too big ,,maybe someone with a 600 will chime in here. As for more power than a 600 I dont think so. The 600 and 550 are close in size. The 550 has the 600 boom and head,,the 700 tail. It is a strong machine. I do not use the Pro 730mx motor. I use the 600mx which is fine for me. Its a fine heli especially for the price in a combo. Parts are everywhere too.

Setup is everything, All my heli's can fly far better than I can pilot them

My 2 cents.

My 550 DFC (3GX with red BL730MX) has been awesome. I'm certainly not a pro but it seems to be exceptional for the intermediate flyer with light 3D skills.

I bought it as my second heli as an upgrade and to cover up the fact that my first helicopter (TREX 450) was a little quick and got out of sight (loss of aspect) rather quickly.

The decision too go with the 550DFC PRO over the 600DFC PRO was mostly due to price point. The 550 is a 22V 6S 5000mah rig (I use a Haiyin 5000 40C pack), the 600 is a 44V 12S 2x6S 3300mah packs. The 550 runs on a 90A ESC with a built in BEC running at 6V. The 600 is a 120A ESC but requires a separate BEC and battery (you could go HV). The Talon 90 can be set to go HV, but I run the stock servos @6V with the 3GX and Futaba SBUS receiver (an extremely simple setup). IMHO, the 600 would out perform the 550 in a smack down. Of note, I have never seen a single brown out or problem with the Talon 90 ESC as has been noted around this forum in the past. turboomni was absolutely right about the head and the boom (they even say 600DFC on them, they are right out of the 600 kit). My flight timer is set for 8 mins. That gets me to about 40% TCS. I haven't done the final calculation to get me to the 20% mark but it should be just past that. I run an Idle 2 throttle curve that V's between 90 and 100% throttle. Stock 550 blades are used but there are some Youngblood 554s I would like to get.

The improvement with the 730MX is the KV rating that makes it more efficient with more torque at a lower temp than the 600MX. It is an advance (on paper), I can't say how much since I've never seen a side by side comparison.

I would say they're not being resold. My LHS has all of the crash kit parts stocked, but I too haven't seen any others at the field.

Haven't had the balls to auto yet, there is allot of high speed swinging mass in the head to give you a good shot at it.

I built mine with several HeliOption upgrades like the frame stiffeners, the main bearing block, and canopy attach hardware. There are plenty of build and setup vids out there as well. I've been flying my 550 since December and haven't had to do a single thing to it. I did however just upgrade the 3GX to V5.0 on the firmware tonight. We'll see how it goes (Align website said only 34 downloads for 5.0 as opposed to 44000 for the 4.0, I guess I stumbled on to that one).

Bottom line: It is a fine piece, The Honda Accord of Helicopters.

the Honda Accord of Helicopters
well said

I love my 550. It was my first real heli after learning up to inverted flight with a 450. The 550 has served me well offering cheap parts and little to no maintenance. It also gave me the ability to learn autorotations, both upright and inverted.

And btw, it fits nicely in the trunk of my Honda Accord.

I love flying, I hate gravity.
