TurboHawk Helicopter Problems
Hi, I am new here and new to RC helicopters. I have a Protocol Turbohawk 3 channel helicopter that shuts off when you try to take off. When you increase the blade speed(red led on circuit board blinks) its almost like an overload breaker shuts the motors off(red led goes off) and it wont work until switch is turned off then on again. The multi color led for cockpit keeps working and doesnt shut off when motors do. Any ideas or help as to what would cause this?

Thank you

Make sure it is fully charged. It could be possible that that is an under-load shutoff. The coaxial helis I've had would only shut off like that if the battery was discharged. Do you have a manual?

I dont have the manual. I fully charged it, the 3.7v rechargeable battery in the copter showed 3.85vdc after charging and it still shuts off. Could that battery be defective? Or 1 of the motors be defective and putting drain on it?

4.20 vdc is a fully charged 1 cell lipo. From past experience that red light normally is a clue that the battery does not have enough juice in it to take off. 3.85 vdc is the battery under no load, more than likely it is dropping too low under load.

altima1779, you beat me to it. I type too slow...

I'm not really a voltage guru, but 3.85 volts on a 3.7 volt battery is almost discharged, at least, really low. Battery could be defective, and yes, there could be a problem with one of the motors. A 3.7 volt battery is fully charged at 4.2 volts.
Try installing fresh alkaline cells in your transmitter/charger. If these are the cells that came with the bird, they are probably standard "Heavy Duty" batteries meaning weak by today's standards and possibly very old. Try fresh alkalines first.

Hope this is your fix.

I will get a new lithium battery and give that a try. This one seemed a little "puffy". Thank you for your help and the link.

One other question, the lithium battery I have says 3.7v 100mah...can I replace it with a 3.7v 240mah or 3.7v 400mah or will it do harm to the unit.

You should try to find one that is similar. A 240 mAh pack will work and will give you twice the flight time BUT it's probably too big in size to fit the cavity of where the cell goes AND it's probably too heavy.

If you must deviate, I would not go beyond 150 mAh but still make sure the size difference is ok for where you want to put it.
