Wow getting quite the discussion going aren't we.
My intention was just to say Kyle is stepping it up and creating a level of skill that will be hard for others to match let alone come close.
The Mikado lineup from heli airframe to vbar to now the tx ( as well as the team pilots) are totally amazing.
I can't imagine what we will be seeing a year or two or five from now.

@ smittylube,

Your question: "...what we will be seeing a year or two..."

Well?? Forgive me for venturing out of the heli world for a moment, but V-Bar/V-Control for airplanes. There are those out there that want a system packed with gyros and the programing to go with it to do both helis AND airplanes, with all the programming being able to be done right from the TX.

Example: Kyle was dynamic soaring two days ago (and may I say he made a new personal best of 373 mph...but he's still kind-of a rookie in the DS realm), and staying ahead of the model and keeping it in the "groove" at 400+ mph is incredibly difficult. Elevator movement full stick at those speeds is about 1mm, and guys that are using gyros in their DS models definitely have the advantage.

BTW, if you've never seen DS, below is a short 24 second video. That blur passing through the video every second or so is the model...going about 390-400 mph...and in real life (the video doesn't do it justice), it is frickin' SCARY...to the point that when a guys gets in the groove and the acceleration starts, you literally hide behind cars. I'm not kidding. There's this uncontrollable self-preservation thing that takes over and you find yourself hiding behind something! The world record BTW is 498 mph! Funny how the fastest thing in the R/C world is powered by nature only.

Anyways, for the guys that fly stuff other than helis, the airplane version will be nice. More cool stuff for the heli guys coming as well I'm sure.

Yeah Dave that's what I'm talking about. We can't even imagine what comes next. Some of this stuff is going beyond Star Trek stuff we thought about 30-40 yrs ago, the technology is amazing as well as Kyle's piloting skills. I think it's neat to see the progression and in Kyle's case the innovation in his style. He has not stagnated and hooked up with mikado seems to be a great match. Great to see both pushing the limits through each other.RPM is your friend..................................until you crash

Also, I guess since this thread is titled "What is up with Kyle", I could post this link to the latest Mikado vid without getting into too much trouble:

Dave:

Excuse my lack of understanding, but I've never seen Dynamic Soaring - how do these aircraft build up the momentum and speed like that?

Pretty interesting and can see how it could be very scary.

Thanks for sharing,
Jeff

Probably the best thing to do rather than me butcher an explanation, is to just check the link below, and follow the page down a little to the diagram and discussion about it.

http://www.rc-airplane-world.com/dynamic-soaring.html

To go the speeds attained today in DS, the models are not really "sailplanes" as you'd probably think...meaning light weight in order to take advantage of rising air currents (thermals).

They are instead purposely built models that are VERY heavy for their size, but incredibly strong. As an example, the current DS record holder has a wing span of 3.3 meters (130 inches). An equivalent true "sailplane" in that size would weigh in the 60-75 ounce range (4-4.5 pounds). A DS model that size weighs 20 pounds!
