ZING ZING ZEEEEEEEEING, weeee, nitro!

Nailed the first run up of my Shuttle's os 32 nitro motor. See the nail in the upper left hand of the vid still? Saw this after pulling the still from vid I took of it's run. The little motor started on the third attempt because I had to ground the glow battery better the second time and it didn't idle right away. I was nervous to be honest, no blades. Here's the oil patch left behind .

I ran it up and down, idle to wot throttle, works as intended 1.5 turns on the needle,

Not bad for an old 20 yr os32 Shuttle, vid to come one day many moons from now (but it will come). Now tell me, HOW TO I GET THE FUEL TO SMOKE?

Ohh yea, I bought 100ml of Castor oil last night and added 4/5ths of it to a liter of Byrons car Nitro 20nitro/12oil, as in the other thread asking what nitro fuel is intended for/ how to make the 12percentoil mix 20, done done.

Lit a match to a little nitro spilled onto pavement last night, WOW what a beautiful blue-ish flame with orange tinges.

HOW DO I GET THE FUEL TO SMOKE?
1. Purchase the correct fuel with at least the minimum amount of lubricant as required by the motor manufacturer. OS recommends 18% lube minimum.

2. Run the motor rich.

3. Remember that smoke alone is not a reliable indicator of lean/richness. How the motor runs and responds, is.

4. I hope you used some high quality, degummed castor oil. You will find with time and heat that fuel containing castor oil is not all that helicopter friendly. It will protect you better during a lean run than a synthetic lube package will (castor burns off and takes excess heat out the exhaust port, synthetics break down and fail to lube). Castor based fuel will eventually build up a layer of sticky (when hot) varnish on the piston skirt and cylinder walls. This makes the motor run hotter, and make more varnish. It's a nasty cycle whose only cure is to dismantle the motor and thoroughly clean it to remove the varnish from the inner surfaces.

My plan is to run it up with some ring from the remaing liter/quatr i have of last years fuel with 50/50 castor/synth lube. So the percent of castor lube in now is about 2/3rds of all the oil, not bad for a bit of extra sealing. The old seal was prbably washed out with the cleaning earlier.

Cool, I fell like BUZZING around a whole afternoon sometime, and I know just the umpteen places around.

We're getting kinda neat now with a ic power plant, this IS the hobby, yeeha, .

we got time for this

I think you are beginning to see the fascination of IC engines. They are an entire hobby unto themselves. ..and did I mention that nitro smells great?

well, I messed with nitro as a young guy and his Cox 049, mounted to a tunnel hull boat as a fan prop eventually and unleashed it across a still pond of rain runoff, that was succesful. Made some rocket cars and used match heads as solid fuel, whooosh for a second or two, Breedlove is a name I remember at the time and Bonneville, fun playing with these things from time to time. I had one of those shared boyhood rooms with my walls plastered with Top Fuel Nitro Dragsters, pages to wall paper, nitro race, nitro race and fly AND-- hover. How cool? ICE COOL, VERY COOL.

The heli large size format is not a friendly Angel from heaven but a controlled beast, depending on who is in "control" and some crash and fade out. Me, we're on, i got this, icanfly and got this. I understand the big boyeeez thing now more, and you ain't seen nutthin yet, till I throw some ytub, hang in there, peace.

the nitro smells great, burnt too. Can I put some Lavender and Cinnamon oil in next, heehee? (it's not for me, it's incense you know like down wind of the Church on a Sunday, people still go to these?) uhhhuh.

Now what of gasoline 2stroke takes over?
