Just thought to mention that I tested my FB 550 with a 9t pinion this morning. My Triton said my 5000 mah 6s pack was at 90%. My throttle curve was 0,50,80. I timed hoverd for 5 minutes and only put 1570 mah back into the pack and as stated the battery was not fully charged. Looks like 10 minutes with 20% reserve will be no problem. Great set up for sport flying and training.

I am using a Castle Creations regulator tied into my esc with red wire removed instead of the separate rx battery they suggest. Thought I would pass this along for the non 3D types.

I really don't know since I was unable to tach it flying alone. I know that opening the throttle got me to the top of my neighbor's 50 foot tree in a time frame I was happy with

10 minute test
I ran a full 10 minute test today and put 2893 mah back into the 5000 mah pack= 289 mah per minute. Looks like a flight time of 13.8 minutes with a 20% ie(1000mah) reserve is possible! 4000mah/289=13.84 minutes.

You know with the Talon 90 you can use Castlelink and modify the settings in the ESC to run just like any other castle ESC.
Like SetRPM mode, Autoration mode,....

Yes, I actually have a programmable esc from CC laying around but I haven't tried it yet. The stock esc in my bird said governor mode but there isn't one. The newer instructions don't mention one. I had a problem and they sent me a new stock esc. I think the brake may be on and I hate going through the beep beep process to reset it but I am going to need to.I may make the esc switch, I normally like governor mode with CC esc's but the old way works well for sport flying and gives better flight times.

I've recently helped setup and flown a friend's 550e with a 9t pinion and with 6s5000 packs and sport to 'very' light 3d (80% flatline idle-up, ~1850 hs) we managed ~7-8 minutes max (to 75-80% discharge). On 100% idle-up (~2000 hs) this came down to 6-7 minutes (but was a lot more fun!).

Once you start throwing your's around a bit I think that you will give up the +10 minute dream imho.

Cheers,
TomC

Sounds about rightJust was curious what she would do time wise and aside from some stall turns I could care less about aerobatics, I prefer scale type flying so it works well for me. Are you using the stock esc and just setting a flat curve? How many point if I may ask 3,5 or more? Thanks.

Stock esc, normal throttle curve 0-55-70-80-100, idle-up1 flat 80%, idle-up2 flat 100%. Pitch normal 40-45-50-75-100, rest at 0-50-100 with 50 = zero pitch, +/- 11 deg total collective pitch.

One thing to watch out for is that if you run your stock esc under load (even just hovering) at less than ~65-70% throttle you may overheat it. Try to keep it closer to 80% or higher and it will actually run cooler.

This is due to the way these kind of esc's control throttle by switching on/off. The lower the throttle, the more switching happens, and this can heat up the esc quite a bit.

If you want to run low throttle (and low hs) then you need to look at a better esc like yge or kontronik and run them in gov mode. Both of these have active freewheeling which allows you to run lower throttle settings more efficiently.

Cheers,
TomC

I'm using the 9 tooth pinion,.. and flying smooth/mild 3D. rpms 1500/1700/1900. Only flying 8 minutes with a timer now, about 90% in the 1900 mode, but should have another telemetry sensor arrive here soon and I'll get some numbers.I also installed the smaller tail pulley due to the lower rpms I planned to fly. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bi...p?&I=LXAHBR&P=7
That speeds it up from 4.56 to 5.12 assuming I hit the right buttons on the calculator <G>. Just got some 95mm tailblades to go on it since the tail can still let go in the lower rpms modes if doing really fast backwards or sideways stuff (the reason most of my time is at 1900). I don't think they ever intended this thing to fly below 2000/2200, so it takes some tinkering to get the lower revs working well.
